Regarding uninstall & install of Norton

    As you may recall I had problems with Norton Antivirus Suite 2006. After I installed & uninstalled it and installed it again and it still didn't work, I uninstalled it again and took it back.

    I tried downloading some Anti Virus Programs online, nothing worked. I was going to take Moses (my computer) to my ISP tomorrow and let them have a go at it. I prayed about it, as I thought I should take another shot at it today.

    God reminded me, last year I was having problem opening my junk mail. My ISP suggested I pick up a CD from them, that should take care of the problem. well I did and it didn't cure the problem. One of the techs suggested I switch to Firefox, that took care of the problem. They told me to just keep the CD.

    Anyway I loaded the CD and everything just came together.

    I downloaded AVG free and ran it, it ran for over an hour and found no viruses. However one of the Antivirus programs I uninstalled came back and started to run. I stopped it and clicked it off, went back to the Control Panel, install/uninstall and that program wasn't there, it hasn't come back. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Other than that, everything seems to be ok.

    Unfortunately, when programs are uninstalled, they never are installed completely. Although it looks like you have uninstalled them from Windows, they leave some trails in your system registry.

    If you are familiar with using regedit, you can go in there and click edit and find. do a search for anything Symantec, McAfee, or Norton. Delete those instances.

    Another way, much safer, of removing files that are left behind is to download a file called RegScrubXp

    I use RegScrubXp after any install and also after uninstalls as well.

    You may also look for a Program called HijackThis

    Hijack this will check registry or startup for any hijack attempts. Both these files can be found on majorgeeks.com.

    There is a possibility that the av program that came back though uninstalled had some business to take care of before it finished its uninstall, it may be gone now.

    Programs going in and coming out get stuck in a cue of sorts and if other things are going on, they might not be allowed to finish.

    This is a reason, when having problems, to power down after uninstalling something and when it reboots it will clear itself. Rebooting normally takes care of this, but not always.

    Thanks for the heads up. I called my ISP today to ask them about that CD, but couldn't get through. All their lines were tied up, thats a first. They must be growing. Used to be you called and talked to a live person within 2 minutes.

    By the way on the news last night they said Norton 2006 Online Suite had problems that allowe hackers to get into your computer. I'm glad I got rid of them.

    I don't know if this phone number works in the USA, but it is for Norton. 1-800-441-7234. It works in Canada.

    I had a lot of problems getting around the net, including opening my email, after downloading my renewal of Norton (now 2006). Once I got hold of a voice at Symantec, it took 30 seconds to turn off certain files, and adjust others, and now everything works fine.............but it sure can be a headache. Apparently Norton is having a lot of problems with the latest version, but I am stuck with it for two more years.

    Norton is one of the new targets.

    Windows is still the biggest, but now Norton and MacAfee are being targetted by hackers.
