Registering Domain Name

    I can't believe this happened to me. I didn't know a single thing about registering a domain name until yesterday. I came up with my name in JAn. and open an on line shoppe in MArch, later in March someone registered my domain name, and they don't even have a site for it yet. So now I've got to find a new name, change my banner(I have to pay to have another one made), then I joined another site that will list my banner linked back to my site and I have to get them to change it too. Plus I've started gainig a following for my stuff and I've got to let all my mailing list people know about it.
    I had no idea this could happen.

    Happens all the time, so don't feel bad.

    There are people out there whose only goal in life (it seems) is to register domain names so that people like you and me will have to buy those names from them if we really want them.

    And if you go to register.com and plug in a name that's already taken, you'll see a statement for "place a bid for this name?" Minimum bid is $200.

    So it's a high-risk, but lucrative, business for the people who register any and all domain names they can think of.

    Once you think of a name, and you plan on using it on the internet, you need to immediately see if it's available, and register it at the earliest possible chance. Then you can start doing all the banners, advertisements, etc.

    Sorry it happened to you. I'm betting if you get in contact with the person who registered it to you, they'd be willing to sell it to you--but at a whole lot more than it would cost to just register the name.

    Ok I'm confused. :confused: It sounds like Katie was actively using the domain name. Is it possible to use a domain name without registering it?

    Bill, I sell my art on a new (just opened this year) site called PrimMart(prim as in primitive art and craft, something like folk art), so my url is www.primmart.com/peddler/redbarnprimitives.html, and my shoppe name is RedBarn Primitives, I did not register it becasue I didn't know anything about it, she should have told all of us who open sites with her about it knowing that mnost of us it was our first web site. So I found out the other day that after I opened my site someone registered it, www.redbarnprimitives.com. So I am in the process of changing my name and will register it the very day I decide which one of the two I am tied on I want to go with. Both are unregistered, I did check to make sure.
    So I supose you can have a website without registering it, but someone may snatch it from you like what happened to me. Thank God they don't have a site, my customers may think it's me and I've just started having repeat customers and orders, they would have gotten my customers. Then again it may be just as Don said, they registered it hopeing to sell it to me. Which I refuse to do.

    Katie, that's unfortunate, but that's what happens. Sort of the same thing happened to me, but they ended up legitimately using the domain name I was planning on (I was set up to take "tegtech.com" because my business name is Tegart Technologies, but someone grabbed it first, and used it because he said his initials were T.E.G.). However, since in your case they are NOT using the domain name for a legitimate reason, but are just "squatting" on it hoping for a legitimate user to purchase it off them, you may be able to legally get him to surrender the domain to you for only the domain transfer fees (which are cheap). I don't know how this works legally, but I know it is done all the time. I have a friend who used to own "disneyland.net", hoping to sell it to Disney for thousands of dollars. Instead, Disney forced him legally to surrender it for just the transfer fee ($14 or something), because they would be a legitimate user of the name, and my friend was not. Maybe someone here can provide more info on the legal ways of obtaining your name back.

    There isnt much you can do legally unless the name is trademarked.
    Unfortunately, since it wasnt bought right away, it is open market and can be purchased by anyone.
    you can try buying a form of it, rbprimitives.com etc get your name out there asap. use a good graphic representation of the name instead of depending on the .com to build branding.
    buy up the .net,.org.biz etc domains while you can as well
