Webmaster, I heard that reimbursable expenses for pastors gives a little tax relief and if the congregation adopts this paying method, it reduces the payroll tax for their pastor. Do you have any input on this? [IMG]

That's correct. Pastors will pay more taxes without an "Accountable Plan" because allowances or reimbursements must be reported as taxable income. These would be deductible expenses if the pastor itemizes on his tax return, but most pastors take the standard deduction, therefore, they cannot take a deduction for these reimbursements.

Every church board should pass a resolution to adopt an Accountable Plan describing the church's reimbursement policy.

This should be in writing and it should clearly specify reimbursable expenses.

For additional info on Accountable Plan for ministry-related expenses get a free copy of IRS Publication 463 at 1-800-829-3676.

Speaking of all this, is it true that the mileage rate this year is 36.5 cents per mile, up from 34.5?

I'll be happy to send you one Kathy.

Anyone seen any hard copy evidence of the mileage rate increase that you can send my way by link, fax, or email?
