After I read this post (# 5 by Saggy) I came up with this thread.

WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER FROM KINDERGARDEN?

All I remember is the teacher making sit in the corner all by myself, just beacuse I had the chicken pox. My mother put a couple of bandaids on me and instructed me to tell the teacher, I got scratched up out in the woods. (My father was a stickler for perfect attendence)

    Thats all I remember.

    Let's see:

being the only girl who wore pants to school (but not for long!!)

being the only child called out by the teacher for doing something all the other girls were doing.

Walter. (I was always friends with the underdog lol)

The other Cynthia (we hated each other all the way through elementary lol, but her little sister and I were great friends!)

Missing the bus one morning because there was a substitute driver and I was NOT going to get on that bus with him!

Speaking of buses, having to be bussed to another elementary because the school that was only blocks from our house didn't have a kindergarten.

That's all off the top of my head.

Being the only one in my class who could read.

The kid who kept trying to eat the crayons and drink the glue.

    My teacher, Mrs. Cabrera.

Being friends with the only black kid in the whole school.

Rolling down the hill inside old tractor tires.

    The smell of the classroom.

I had graduated from high school before kindergartens were started in my area. I really do not know when they began.

I may be wrong, but I believe the first kindergartens were begun in Germany ... that is why they are called kindergarten.

    Kinder ... child or children
    Garten ... garden

I remember nothing about kindergarten itself, but I remember the school had one room.

I remember lots of stuff from kindergarten. Of course, that's because it wasn't so very long ago.

    My teacher

pretending to be asleep at nap time

being the only kindergarten kid reading stacks of books from the school library because I'd finish my work before the day was over.

wearing those dumb ACE uniforms: red or navy jumpers with a white blouse

Buying a swordfish for the classroom fish tank that killed all the other kid's fish

The time a loudmouthed classmate was so noisy, he disturbed the other classes so the principal came to our classroom and placed a strip of duct tape over the kid's mouth. (He would have been sued for child abuse nowadays)

    • 1966 - There were no kindergartens in the public schools. I went to the Episcopal church across from the elementary school.
    • My teacher, Mrs. Rutledge, was wonderful.
    • We got chocolate milk on Thursdays.
    • This one loud-mouthed girl who always repeated the teacher's instructions to the rest of us as if we didn't hear her the first time! :tongue3:
    • My first boyfriend, Kenny. He stepped on a bee at recess and gave it to me as an engagement ring. (He was my boyfriend again in 9th grade. All he gave me then was a hard time.)
    • Watching for my parents' yellow and brown Ford at "go-home" time.
    • Learning to read, color in the lines, and share everything.
    • Hanging my little red coat in my cupboard. It had a duck on it.

    A couple of things:

I attended a DOD kindergarten outside of London.
    I sometimes wouldn't take naps.
One day our "school bus" was an English taxi-cab. I think I was responsible for no more taxi-cabs to school because I started a fight.
After a field trip to a farm, on which my mom was a chaperone, I wanted to stay and got into trouble with her over it.
I had to undergo speech therapy while in kindergarten and finished it two years later.
I eventually got expelled because it wasn't working out for me( I don't remember if I lasted the entire year). However, my parents enrolled me in an English private school where I had a much better experience.

    From Kindergarten, I remember:

Moving from one Kind. class to a different one due to over crowding.

On my birthday, I got to have the birthday buddy on my desk, but only for a half day since I had to share birthdays with someone else.

I enjoyed playing in the block section best.

Didn't have kindergarten in private all boys boarding school in England and Wales. Our classes included all ages at a common bench and we advanced as we learned. Eventually finished with Form 6 and approved entrance to Oxford or Cambridge. Far different schooling system.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I remember one time there were about four or five of us kids in a playhouse we had in our room. All of a sudden this little girls starts using the bathroom right there! It was a mad scramble as we all tried to cram through the little door at once. It was the five year old version of someone yelling fire in a theater!

I remember riding the bus to school.

I remember nap time where we had to lay on a blanket on the floor, and I was never tired.

I remember the row of little hooks on the wall where we hung our coats and the little open cubbyholes underneath for our boots (in winter time) and cubbyholes above them for our lunches.

I remember doing crafts and playing with toys.

I remember that my grandfather would come in every now and then to tell us stories and how proud I was that he was my grandfather (this was back in the days when storytelling was considered to be an art and many folk festivals featured storytellers, my grandfather being one of them)

I remember driving my teacher crazy by constantly singing "WAR EAGLE FLY DOWN THE FIELD...EVER TO CONQUER NEVER TO YIELD..." at the top of my lungs.

I remember that I was always looking for something to jump off of. My friends were always trying to get me to climb up somewhere and jump off.

I remember playing with the "Barrel of Monkeys" toy (plastic monkeys that you link together) and thinking, "this is the dumbest game I've ever seen".

I remember that the playground was way out in the woods and always getting in trouble for running off into the woods.

I remember that we would start every day by singing "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" (that's "God Save the Queen" for you, Jim) and thinking the last line was about "three dumb rings".

I remember having a crush on a little girl in the class and asking her for a date, then being so upset when she laughed at me (I was too young to realize that little girls giggle when they're embarrased and thought she was laughing at me) that I locked myself in the bathroom and sang commercial jingles so loudly that I stopped the class.

I remember that there was a lake across the street and that when my mom would come and get me, she'd always bring a couple of pieces of bread and we would feed the ducks together.

I remember trying to be extra good so that the teacher would let me help pass out the cookies at snack time.

I remember that there was a karate studio across the street and how much I liked to watch them through the window.

Our kindergarten was in a Baptist church and I remember that our teacher, who happened to be the pastor's daughter, got in trouble for teaching us to sing the Beatles' "Got to Get You Into My Life". To this day, that's still one of my favorite songs.
