A list of lessons from a beloved parent
    To the Editor:
On Nov. 14, I lost someone very special to me when my father passed away. I would like to share the important things my father taught me.
    1) Always be proud of your conservative roots.
    2) Abortion is wrong.
    3) The best present you can get on your 10th birthday is a red, 10-speed bike.
    4) Keep a full tank of gas in your vehicle, especially in winter.
    5) Have a spare tire, with air.
    6) Spare tires don’t do much good without a jack.
    7) How to change my oil.
    8) How to change a flat tire. (I prefer my way: Call AAA.)
    9) Stay away from alcohol, cigarettes and drugs.
    10) You can fix everything with duct tape.
    11) Don’t leave your tools outside.
    12) How to grow tomatoes, zucchini and hot peppers.
    13) How to make butter.
    14) That your best friends can have four legs.
    15) You have to eat anything you kill.
    16) Stand tall and be proud.
    17) Split wood and start a fire.
    18) Tried to teach me to back up a trailer, but I still can’t do that.
    19) Tap your brakes and steer into the skid.
    20) Make grilled cheese sandwiches.
    21) Anything with bacon has got to be good.
    22) Mobile home living is good living.
    23) Remember that I’m no better than anyone else and vice versa.
    24) How to drive standard shift.
    25) Speak clearly enough for people to understand you.
    26) If someone hurts you, ignore him or her; it’s their loss.

Here are the things my dad taught me--all negative. He taught me nothing good or useful..

    (1) You're useless (meaning me).
    (2) You can't do anything right (also meaning me).
    (3) Children should be seen and not heard.
    (4) Children have nothing to say that's worth hearing anyway.
    (5) A man should never say "I love you", because it shows that he is weak.
    (6) A man should never show emotions, for the same reason as (5).
    (7) I was a mistake.
    (8) He claimed me as his son only when I pleased him or did something right.
    (9) I rarely pleased him or did anything right.
    (10) Life without him is a lot better.
    (11) How NOT to discipline children.
    (12) How to verbally abuse children.
    (13) How to physically abuse children.
    (14) How to make a child grow into a neurotic, fearful, and mistrusting adult
who cannot get close to anyone for fear of being hurt.
    (15) How to criticize, belittle, ridicule, and embarrass others.

The list goes on, but that's enough. Unfortunately, I look too much like him, which is why I wear a beard and mustache, he never did. Fortunately, I didn't abuse my children as much as he did me, but that's mainly due to seeing very little of them as they grew up, which is probably a good thing. Also, I did not follow in his footsteps in most of that. The rest God has either taken from me or is still working on it. I'm a work in progress and have been since May 18, 1963. I'm just a slow learner.

It's only the grace of God that has kept me reasonably sane and normal, whatever normal is. Having worked for 28 years in a psychiatric hospital, I'm not sure what sane is either. :godisgood:
