Were you there? Do you remember this?

Could a similar event happen again?

    Wasn't there.
    Do remember it.
Under the right circumstances, sure it could happen again.

    What Jeff said.

I also remember that when the University contracted with the sculptor George Segal to make a commemorative statue, he proposed an Abraham-Issac thing, with Issac bound and kneeling before Abraham with a raised knife. It was rejected with the comment that what the advisory board had in mind was a bare-breasted nymph representing, I forget...peace, justice, some abstraction. I don't know what they finally came up with.

I like what they ended up with. Do you know who designed it? It's kinda Maya Linish (she really influenced memorial design).

Would like to say that rioters got what they deserved, but that is "overkill".

Eye for eye, tooth for tooth actually LIMITS the response. In old cultures, you knocked my tooth, I could kill you. OT puts dampers on blood feuds.

So the students should've shot the guardsmen, eye for an eye?

No, the guardsmen just should have thrown the rocks back.

Daisy, the designer was Bruno Ast, an architect on the faculty of the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Students would not disperse and threw rocks. That is NOT life-threatening and iminent mortal danger.

So soldiers should NOT have used such force and think everyone agrees now. But folks, I've lived through the "peace" marches and seen some of the most awful violence by the liberals on said marches.

I've participated in a couple of peace marches, back in the day, and both the liberals and the DC police were gratifyingly nice. Perhaps I was just lucky in the particular events I attended.

I have seen film clips (at eleven) of others that were not peaceful. Some of the awful violence - was it by liberals or Nixonian plants? That also happened.

    Yes, I think most agree.
I don't think violence at marches can be limited to just liberals. When the Iraq war first started, there was a pro march near here (consisting mostly of conservative church folks), that ended in violence when an anti-war bystander yelled "bring our troops home now". A scuffle broke out, and he ended up getting injured by a pro-war marcher who took a swing at him.

1968 and Father Groppi led a "peace" march from Milwaukee to Madison (before the anti-war group invaded campus, blew up a building, killing people there). Maranatha BBC was just beginning and was on the march route.

Remember couple of the faculty and about 50 dorm guys being prepared to "oust" them from camping out on our campus. Lined up under the big pines on the main street side of campus.

Ended up they marched right by our fierce-looking entourage and sought to camp out a few miles down the road.

But we were READY TO RUMBLE.

I don't think that Militant Leftist equates to Liberal any more than Militia Rightists equate to Conservatives.

And I do. Liberalism is by nature "anti-nomian" (no law for them; rule of crowd; based on feeling) and the result of liberalism is often anarchy.

Talk to the Democrats who were at the Chicago Convention in 1968. They saw the fruit of liberalism tear apart the city and the party.

I was in N.E. Ohio in May of 1970. It`s not as simple as this short story tells it. It was stated, that at least one of the students was shot with a non-military round. One was shot in the leg while a good distance away. The Guardsmen fired over the students` heads.

In April of 1970, there was a "wildcat" truckers` strike. The Pennsylvania Turnpike was lighted up like the 4th of July! Guardsmen were sent from one situation into another.
