I have been to one and enjoyed it--in Waxahachie, Texas. I like the turkey legs.

I don't usually have the time when they come around here--or I haven't found them. .

I looked for faires in North Carolina and there is one in Huntersville! It is running Oct 6th through November 18th. I can't speak for the faire itself, but, if you have the time, it is worth the look. If you go, let me know what you think. Here's the link to their website.

We have Canterbury Faire every year. They have an group that puts on a mystery play while walking through the crowd. At the end of the 3rd day, the mystery is solved.
My husband likes the jousting matches and the sword fights. Lots of people dress in style and the booths are designed like castles.
I'm uncomfortable with some of the booths and displays because they remind me of the occult. I guess I should study the period more to see if my uneasiness is unfounded.

I used to love to read King Arthur stories, and this is the only connection I have to this.. ..

As a Civil War re-enactor, I have gotten involved with some other historic recreation groups - WWII soldiers, Star Wars types, and the knights. Make authentic equipment and costume and it is quite fun.

South of Minneapolis they have Scarborough Fair (concludes about now) and have done a lot there - except jousting. I may look dumb, but that is more real than I want to get!

I am about 1 1/2 hours drive from Waxahachie, TX, where they have Scarborough Faire every year, usually late April to early June. I have gone 8 of the last 10 years, and there is always something to be enjoyed. A few times some of those who play the Renaissance character have gotten ticked at me for being more smart and insulting with them than I will let them get with me. The guy who played Shakespeare especially didn't like it when I answered his routine about Queen Mab with the dialogue from Romeo and Juliet with my own twisted quotes and malpropisms.

My favorite part is usually the Falconry ["fawlconree"] show. The skills of some of God's creatures, as well as their friendships with man, is astounding.

One thing I don't like about these faires is their emphasis upon supernatural myths. It seems the biggest souvenir items for sale are the dragons-- porcelain, glass, pewter, et al. Not far behind are the wizards-- those magicians using the tall cone-shaped hats with the crescent moon. Fortune tellers... don't you know they just love me for the things I have said to them?

But I like this escape from the modern world, even though it is so incomplete and contrived. So, likely enough, I will go again next year.
