Repentance and Preaching the True Gospel

Here is a sermon I preached last night on how to preach the true gospel.

It is mainly made up of a study done on repentance and on how to use the law of God to bring conviction of sin.

OK Jordan, you asked for criticism, I'm going to give you some. You referenced Mat 7:23 to argue against "easy believism". I think you have this completely backwards, this passage argues against Lordship Salvation, not easy believism. Read again.

Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Do these persons claim they should be saved because they simply prayed a prayer and asked Jesus to save them? NO. So this does not resemble easy believism whatsoever.

What does it resemble? It resembles Lordship Salvation!

Note the emphasis on the Lordship of Jesus. Twice Jesus emphasizes that these persons say, "Lord, Lord". And Jesus tells us just because someone declares him to be Lord does not guarantee they will enter heaven, but someone who does his Father's will. And what is the Father's will that we do?

Jhn 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

What do these false converts claim as to why they should be saved? A prayer? That they believed? NO. They boast they showed real evidence of conversion, they prophesied in Jesus's name, they cast out devils in Jesus's name, and in Jesus's name they did many WONDERFUL WORKS.

This is Lordship Salvation being described Jordan, not easy believism. And although these persons did so many good works in Jesus's name, Jesus said he never knew them.

It depends on what how you view Lordship Salvation.

It seems anyone who teaches repentance of sin is accused of being a Lordship Salvation advocate.

There's a difference between changing ones mind about sin, and the actual giving up of sin as a work.

One must let go of sin in order to truly trust in Christ.

But it's not a physical letting go, just a letting go of the mind,heart,and emotions.

He thinks he is righteous because he's gone to church and tried to be a good person, all the while excusing the sin of his heart that he has never truly repented of.

Just like the Pharisees Jesus condemned for having inward sin and self righteousness, the Catholic will be the same way,

He says "DEPART FROM ME YE WORKERS OF INIQUITY."

These people before the Lord are trying to cloak their sin in good works.

So they must repent of the sin they are trying to cover, and the fact that they are trying to cover their sin.

You can use this passage to teach against works salvation, and easy believing, because at the core of the passage it teaches both the necessity of repentance and the need of depending on Christ alone for salvation.

I don't think it works for easy-believeism. The condemned people claimed to have prophesied and cast out demons in Jesus' name. How many people do you know that believe they are saved because they repeated a "sinners prayer" that have preached and cast out demons?

The passage is about church leaders that never repented and believed, were simply dishing out their unbiblical doctrines.

I can tell you how to preach the Gospel in under five minutes. Do it like Paul did it.

In Acts 13:14-41, Paul relates a very brief history of Israel, from Joseph to John the Baptist, relating David to Christ, and John to Elijah, the former saying, "I am not He. But one is coming after me the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie" (vv.17-25). Paul then states that, despite these witnesses, the leaders and people of Jerusalem did not recognize Him when He came, and they crucified Him, but God raised Him from the dead. Jesus then appeared for many days to those in Jerusalem, "the very ones who are now witnesses to the people" (vv.26-31). Through Him, Paul says, "everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses." And Paul finishes by quoting Habakkuk 1:5 -- "BEHOLD, YOU SCOFFERS, AND MARVEL, AND PERISH; FOR I AM ACCOMPLISHING A WORK IN YOUR DAYS, A WORK WHICH YOU WILL NEVER BELIEVE, THOUGH SOMEONE SHOULD DESCRIBE IT TO YOU" (v. 41).

There is no condemnation there, and there is barely a call to repentance. What is there? Confrontation where the people are at, an expression of God's love for them, what He has done for them, and a call to look and see what is going on around them. Paul shows love by telling them the truth without alienating them.

And what happened? The people begged Paul to come to the synagogue and preach these things the following Sabbath. When confronted by the Jews and blasphemed, Paul told them it was simply the word of God. And the Gentiles who were appointed to believe rejoiced and glorified the Lord.

Now that's preaching the Gospel.

How long do you suppose it took our Lord to teach the Sermon on the Mount. There He delivered a speech that pretty much outlined the necessary character of those who want to be a part of the kingdom of God. And did he take questions after.....absolutely.

If it was totally inclusive of the content in Matthew chapters five through seven, it took two minutes either side of twelve minutes and thirty seconds, allowing for differences in the Aramaic and English versions.

There He delivered a speech that pretty much outlined the necessary character of those who want to be a part of the kingdom of God.

To whom did He deliver the Sermon? Disciples? Or believers?

And did he take questions after.....absolutely.

Matthew 8 shows Him coming down off the Mount, healing a leper, and going home to Capernaum.

Well, you used it as an example against easy believism, when it has nothing to do with that.

And Jordan, salvation is easy, all you have to do is ask.

Jhn 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

I am not talking about repeating a prayer to get someone off your back, but if you sincerely pray to Jesus and ask him to forgive you and give you everlasting life, he gives it to you.

I am talking about a person who knows they are a sinner and who knows the consequence of sin. They know what they are asking Jesus to save them from.

I later listened to much more of your sermon, and other than this misuse of Matthew 7, I think you did a good job, although you got away from the mic a few times and it was hard to hear you. But you did very well, and overall from what I heard it was a good sermon.

But don't make salvation hard. 3000 folks got saved on Pentacost, know why? Because salvation is easy for us. It was hard for Jesus.

Jordan, how do YOU know that Joe Catholic excuses the sin of his heart and refuses to repent. You don't know this, you cannot know this. I know many Catholics which this is simply not the case. Do not accuse me of defending any catholic theology, but simply broad base statement such as this simply cannot be known by your or me.
