In February, 2006, Dr. Jerry Vines is retiring as pastor at FBC, Jacksonville, FL. Who will be his successor?

    Anyone care to speculate?

Whoever it is will have a hard time. I've heard that pastors who relieve successful pastors always have a hard time because the general conversation among th econgregation is, "He's not like Dr. Vines."

    Perhaps people expect too much.

I live very close to Jacksonville and have heard Dr. Vines preach many times. He's a very loved man. That being said, I haven't heard of anyone that's even being considered. I'm certain they will take their time.

    Get the scene!!!

The 'tele rings at Blackbird's house!!

Its---its---its---the search committee at FBCJAX!!!They want to know if I'll take the position! Blackbird tells them he'll have to pray about it

Meanwhile---he hangs up the 'tele---looks over at his wife and says

"Honey!! I'll pray while you pack!!!!!"

If its "Co-Pastors" they want---well---it just may come down to me and ole PastorSBC1303!!!

One thing is for sure---whoever it is---if he doesn't bleed SBC Ultra-Conservative he won't last 2 seconds there!!!

PS and Hint Hint----My blood bleeds SBC Ultra-Conservative!!!!!

Being a Jax native myself and having many friends who attend FBC-Jax, I am praying that they will get a man who can help them stay the course. FBC has had a great testimony and influence in Jax for over 167 years.

Although I am IFB I have always respected FBC, and most of the IFB in Jax do also. Years ago, Dr. Bob Gray (Trinity Baptist Church) and Pastor Lindsay, Jr. (FBC pastor) would even chat on the phone from time to time. When Lindsay, Jr. was sick and in the hospital, Dr. Gray would ask the church to pray for him.

Although I now live far from Jax, I am praying that the light of the Gospel will continue to shine out from FBC and that they will maintain their conservative leanings.

When I was transitioning out of the IFB world into the SBC several years ago, I attended the Pastor's Conference at First Jax. The sign out in front of Tom Neal's church read: Attend the only real Pastor's Conference at First Baptist Church Hammond, IN.

Of course since then Hammond has fallen out of favor with Neal and his cohorts.

I have not attended a First Jax conference in years -- a little too traditional for my type. I have heard rumors that Mac Brunson is next in line for First Jax.

Typical arrogance of many in that mindset.

That would not surprise me. It is kinda odd at one time no one would have considered leaving FBC Dallas for anywhere else, and now there are probably several places higher on the list in man's eyes.

I thought FBC Jax had a successor already on staff for a seamless transition?

Most wouldn't like him. He expects too much.

Nope. Pastor Lindsay, Jr. and vines were co-pastors until Lindsey, Jr. passed away, then Vines assumed the position as sole pastor. When Vines announced his planned resignation earlier this year it was a shock to all.

Tom Neal is not in any way, manner, shape or form
my type of IFB. When I was between churches one time, we visited Berean. ONE time - ONE service. That was all it took to convince me that was not my type of place.

BTW- Dr. Vines spoke at an IFB conference I attended a while back and he said he was the first Independent Baptist pastor to be the president of the SBC.

There are quite a few IFB's who attended Pastor's School at FBC in Jax. Not sure that they still do it any more. I enjoyed them.

(Just looked at FBCJax website and they DO still have the annual Pastor's conference- this year will be 20th year. Looks like an interesting line up of speakers and seminars.)

I am available and would not mind leaving -3F Wyoming at this time!

Of course, modesty will not permit my submission of a resume to the search committee. I will however forward an abridged 232-page copy to anyone here . .

Only 232 pages? You need to get some experience first, Dr. Bob [IMG]

Maybe the transitional person didn't pan out?
