Report: Foreign Coronavirus Disinformation Campaign Trying to Cause U.S. Panic

An unnamed “senior official” told Fox News that “there is an ongoing effort to spread disinformation and cause undue panic” among U.S. citizens, but confirmed, “there is no national quarantine for the United States.” Now, more than ever, “it’s important we remain vigilant in ensuring our information is coming from verified sources,” they said.

The Associated Press received similar communication from the White House, warning of “a deliberate effort by a foreign entity to sow fears of a nationwide quarantine amid the virus outbreak.” These officials also spoke on condition of anonymity and declined to name the source of the campaign.

On Sunday, the National Security Council tweeted: “Text message rumors of a national #quarantine are FAKE. There is no national lockdown,” and encouraged Americans to pay attention to CDC guidance instead.

this is from an email I received:

Six weeks ago China lost a major trade battle with the United States. In retaliation China released the spread of the coronavirus, which is a man-made bioweapon, which is being used to topple the economy of the United States and its Western allies. By causing fear and panic, which is going on right now. It's interesting that China warned its friends Russia and North Korea to close its borders and limit flights. Russia has also zero deaths from the coronavirus.

Yes, but China hasn't, why would they release it over there first? I have heard the virus got out deliberately but some guy in China eating an infected bat makes more sense.

As for all the hysteria, don't want to say I think it's justified, because it is causing panic and seems overblown for now. But downplaying it could cause mucho death and destruction, better safe than sorry.

edited to add - I just figured out why it's called corona-19. It was identified in 2019, duh.

We need a nationwide 14 day quarantine.

BREAKING: Percent of Deaths from the Coronavirus Compared to Deaths From the Flu in the US Reach 0.7% (155/22,000) - The World Has Gone Mad!

If you can’t see the difference & the hyperbole surrounding the complete upheaval over this virus that has NEVER happened before.........but really, that’s why you’re here now, things suck & you love it so, you just want to share. What a guy.

Sorry, I pretty much lost faith in the article as soon as I read “An unnamed Senior Official” told Fox News.” You guys would never let that fly if it was posited to you in an argument. Get real. If that is now considered a viable source then don’t try to claim the high ground later. Also, even Fox News has hilariously changed their tune after Trump finally started to take the situation seriously.

I don’t love it when things suck. My wife is a nurse and I’m pretty sure she is tired of hearing simpletons say everyone is overreacting when she is going into a potentially dangerous situation everyday.

You just want to peddle unproved conspiracy garbage from the internet. What a guy.

This is the type of misinformation targeted against Trump’s covid 19 plan that Trump supporters need to rally against.

The coronavirus death tally is low compared to the flu death tally at the moment because influenza has been spreading in the US for about 20 weeks now and is about to pass its peak incidence and trend down. Meanwhile the coronavirus infection and death rates have just started, is increasing exponentially and is underreported because of difficult access of testing before this week.

It has been 9 weeks since the first reported case in the US and there is a lag of around 20 days between infection and death so the deaths you are seeing now are a reflection of infections that happened 20 days ago (around 6 weeks from the first case). For comparison influenza has an infection to death value of around 10 days so you get your death data much quicker.

So they are comparing near the end of the influenza season to the very beginning of covid 19. That is commonly referred to as comparing apples to oranges.
