Well...since I'm on here wondering around this morning, Brian made a comment that jumped out at me, about talking to pastors that were retired. Can someone tell me where this comes from? I cannot find one iota of scripture to say we ever retire from the ministry. Except of course if we're laid in a grave.

I assume that some denominations have pastors retire (and receive pensions) at a set age. Baptists usually do not do this.

However, most pastors DO retire at some point because of illness or infirmity, and go into a different mode of ministry.

For the past 2+ years I have not pastored or taught full time because of illness. Now, I preach regularly, do weddings and funerals and lots of counseling.

God called me to minister and I will be doing THAT until He calls me home!

    (Just a personal view)

Guess I'm outta practice, but thats what I meant, not just pastors, but any ministry that God has put someone in. I can understand having to change ministries ( if the Lord is in it) or shift gears somewhat.
But to me retiriment would sorta be quitting
& I don't see where we ever have that as an option.

I feel like I need to clarify what I meant about those 'retired' pastors. They were all as active as health would allow them to be. Sadly like all flesh thiers is getting weak and they aren't able to serve like they once did. They all had some type of continueing ministry after leaving full time pasorates. I don't have my refernce stuff handy to find this verse but it goes something like no man having put thier hand to the plough and turning away is fit for the kingdom of God. Any way I feel as you do that service here is until we get there!

It seems to me there comes a time when a man can no longer physically keep up with the demands of ministry. Contrary to some people's opinion, it is not an easy job.

Retiring from the pastorate? No problem.

Retiring from ministry? Probably not since every believers is to be a minister.

Just a commment about Luke 9:62, Brian. I would not equate that idea with pastoral retirement. That verse in context is refering to people who lose their focus and quit on God for other more worldly or personal pursuits, not pastors who get tired and quit serving.

As a number have stated, retirement from the pastoral or permanent ministry...YES...retirement from service for Christ...NO! ;)

Even a minister laying on his death bed, is still an active pastor. I can believe, that many a minister is such a situation, has spoke to a loved one, standing over his death bed about Jesus. As for retiring upon death, must I remind you, that during the thousand year reigh, some ministers believe that we will be ministering to the unsaved.... If that is true, we don't retire at death, but take a small vacation, until the thousand year reign (Please, lets not debate the thousand year reign issue... My comment is meant as a I'll contribute to this one....).

Well I say I don't get to preach enough now,
so in a way I hope you're right. To Preach for a thousand years, & have just ONE sermon!
    That would..or will..be something.
But back to my subject, Mabey you all are right about if you're physically incapable, but even then I can't see being finished untill our Father says we're finished & from what I've seen thats when we're laid in a grave.
