Revelation 20:13,14

The word for death is thanatos, the greek word for death. Legends and myths sometimes personify Thanotos as the dread lord of death. Hades is the greek word translated "hell" and is the place where dead people go. In greek mythology it had both the good and the bad there, the bad people having torments and the good people dwelling in happiness in the Elysian Fields. But it corresponds also to the Hebrew word Sheol, which is a much vaguer term, meaning simply the place, wherever it is or whatever it is, that people go when they die.

We are not able to draw from this verse a more detailed description of death and hades, but we are clearly promised that death has ended for us, and in that sense, death itself has died. And so also for the place where dead people must be, for when we have passed from death into life, we are no longer in the place where dead people go!
