.....With 10 percent of our church family out of work due to the recession, our expenses in caring for our community in 2009 rose dramatically while our income stagnated," the open letter read. "Still, with wise management, we've stayed close to our budget all year. Then ... this last weekend the bottom dropped out."
"On the last weekend of 2009, our total offerings were less than half of what we normally receive -- leaving us $900,000 in the red for the year, unless you help make up the difference today and tomorrow."....

looks more like his church, not him personally, also he does not keep the money form the sales of his books, he donates it, whether or not it is to his church I don't recall. a lot of churches are hurting, I suspect one reason is unemployment continues to rise, people with no money have none to give.

All churches have budgets, even large ones. If this were anyone but Warren it would never had been reported.
Our church has 200 and our pastor is well paid...and we receive the same kind of letters.

I disagree. A church with 22,000 members being $900,000 in the red is newsworthy.
Why is it newsworthy? Would it have been the same if he had 220 members and was $9000 in the hole? The economy is in the toilet, house values (especially in California) have plummeted, and I'm sure many in his congregation are hurting financially like the rest of the country. At any rate I didn't see anything in the article where he needs money (what the op states). Notice this: "With 10 percent of our church family out of work due to the recession, our expenses in caring for our community in 2009 rose dramatically while our income stagnated"

If they are that far under budget due to taking care of those in need, praise God!

There was another thread about a church having savings.

This is where a savings account would have come in handy.

It's newsworthy, because it's in the news. When you find a 220 member church with 6 digits of red ink, you may start a thread of yer very own.

Personally, I don't like the guy. I don't trust famous preachers. But That has nothing to do with this. I read it in the news, and posted it here. That's where it begins and ends. I won't explain it further. Take up any problems with the forum's modersators.

Not meaning to argue, but I think that's the reason for the thread. RW isn't asking for money for himself, but for the church.

Argue away. The title of the thread says he needs money. All the disagreement hasn't changed anything.

I don't know if he has incorporated his church, or not, but I would have to assume he is the head of that business, and is responsible for it's finances.

Such a mean spirited thread.

I know of no ministry that hasn't been affected in the last 6 to 9 months. I also know of several ministries of considerable size looking at six figure shortfalls. All have mentioned it.

There is some newsworthiness in that Pastor Warren is a man of influence, but to gossip about it and openly say you don't like someone seems hardly Christian.

We can disagree with many of Pastor Warren's methods, success, and personality but when was the last time you prayed for him? When was the last time you prayed for his church and this situation?

BTW: I wonder how the OP would have responded when Dr. Jerry Falwell sent out messages like this? Or another ministry...

the title sounds like rw is asking people to give him money, when in fact it is a typical pastors letter to members about the churches need.
as a matter of fact we recieved a similar letter this past year.

are you acusing rw of mishandling church monies, sounds like it, no one can be responsible for money not given to the church.

Why?...........

I am never the head of the corp nor do I ever have direct access to church funds.

Sigh. I don't explain myself. If those are words you want to put in my mouth, go ahead. I don't care.

This is not a mean spirited thred, but there have been some mean spirited posts in it.
