The right v left debate continues to flourish on the BB and just curious how "in-line" the BB contributors are with the world-wide stats on "right v left handedness".

Oh, so just make me feel left behind Teresa! ;)
I put 50/50. I write with my left hand, although I was forced for some dumb reason to write with my right when I was little. I only do it now if the pencil is laying on that side and I'm just way to lazy to reach across with the other hand. LOL. I use scissors with my right, use a fork with my left, but eat finger foods with my right.
I hold the dishcloth in my left hand, but the washcloth in the tub with my right.
    It's altogether a confusing situation.
When I had my arm in a cast the doctor in the ER asked, before he put it on, "Are you right or left handed"? I didn't know what to say, I really figured it shouldn't matter anyway, he still needed to put it on the broken one! [IMG]

    Write with the left hand

    Eat with the right

Side kick is stronger on the left

Round kick is stronger on the right

Throw the ball stronger with my right hand

    Wave hi with the right

Knife hand strike stronger with the left

Conduct the band stronger with the right hand

Front kick stronger with the left leg

Spin heel kick stronger with the left leg

Work the Nun-Chukas stronger with the right hand

Tonfas are stronger in the left hand

Kendo Sword is stronger in the right hand

Sias are stronger on the left hand.

I would guess that I am about 50/50 on this.

Gina, when my oldest sister (she was left-handed) started school (circa 1945), they made everyone write with their right hand. In the same school, about ten years later, when my next (left-handed) sister started they had changed and let students write with whatever hand was natural for them.

[Entire post is a sly attempt to accuse Gina of being OLD  :D ]

Mostly right, but long hours on a baseball field have left me with the ability to throw and catch with either hand.

I was LEFT behind once.......does that count?

If we are left of centre does that make us right even though we are left?

When we were blessed with a left-handed daughter, we realized the curse of being left-handed. "Well, why don't the scissors work in the left hand?" "The scissors just scriggle the paper!"..."Then hold the paper straight."......."I am..." Off to the shop and purchase left-handed scissors. Do sewing needles and knitting needles come in right and left designations?

    Cheers,

    Jim

Did anyone else ever read the book The Left Handed Syndrome? It claimed that left-handedness was caused by slight brain damage at birth and that left-handers were almost always born under difficult circumstances (long pregnancies, or ceasarean). Then it charted the life expectancy of left-handers and found that there are few left-handers who live into their 80s and 90s mainly because they tend to dye in accidents--accidents caused by making a left-handed physical mistake in a right-hand biased world. As I left-hander, I found the book depressing but it has encouraged me to always look both ways before crossing the street. :D [IMG]

Swaimj...do you look left or right first? I read somewhere that people naturally look to the left first...maybe that just applies to North Americans where you drive on the wrong side of the roadway. In the UK and Australia, looking left might land you on a bonnet ornament.

We are so right oriented, but in the military it is Left,,right,, left,,right......and when we miss out,,,,,,he will shout,,Your other left....

    Cheers,

    Jim

Hmmm...I had to think about that, but I think I look to the right first.

I am right handed. My dad, however, was left handed in every thing except writing where he used both hands perfectly. This is put down to his school would tie up the left hand 'cos they thought there was something wrong to use the left hand.
Just a thought.......does this mean it is possible for us all to train ourselves to use the other hand?

I am thankful that I started school after they gave
up that foolishness of not allowing a child to
write naturally. I do remember my first teacher
commenting about my being left-handed but
saying that I would be alllowed to write naturally.

Another teacher--fourth grade--who did not like
me informed me that I would never have decent
handwriting becaus I am left-handed. That really
    cheered me up.

Regarding left-handed products, there are many:
rulers, drinking cups with the logos on the correct
side, window scrapers, etc. Back when all writing
pens smeared for left-handers, they made
    special smearless ink pens.

My favorite product is the left-handed spiral-
bound notebook: when writing on the correct
side of the page, one's arm does not have to
rest upon the spirals, because the spiral is upon
the right side of the notebook.

I am taking several classes right now, and I set
up each ring binder to open from the left, writing
upon the "back side" of the notebook paper. This
is so much beter than trying to curve one's arm
and hand around those rings in order to write.

I love Hebrew books, because they open on the
correct side for me, and the Hebrew language.
Of course, I enjoy Hebrew for more reasons than
just this, but it is a perfect language for lefties.
    No smeared Hhebrew papers!! 8o)
