Of course, I don't believe there are two different ways to be saved.

Yet, in using the Roman Road to point one to Christ, I was taught to read Ro 10:9, "Confess with your moth 'Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart that God raised him fom the dead, you will be saved(NIV)." Then I was taught to move to 10:13 and suggest that he call on the Lord to save him.

My question: Why can't we just stop at 10:9? Placing faith in the resurrected Chrsit and confessing him as Lord is said to be enough. What's the point of going on to v. 13?

Wouldn't it be okay to read v.9 then simply ask, "do you believe this?" And "do you wish now to confess Jesus Christ as your Lord?"

Maybe there ought to be some question like "Are you sorry for your sins and repent of them?"

Or----are verses 10 and 13 directly related to each other and inseparable parts of the process?

    Release the hounds.

    They are inseparable.

We cannot stop at verse 9 because Paul did not stop at verse 9.

One can confess Christ until the Rapture and it does not necessarily make one saved.

    Jesus said
Many who profess Christ with their lips have never ever had a relationship with Him. To have a relationship with Him, one needs to keep in constant communication with Him.

If you got married and then immediately moved to another town and left your wife behind in the town you were married in and never called or wrote her, could you truly say you were in close relationship?

    Rom 10:13 (KJV1611 Edition):
For whosoeuer shall call vpon the Name of the Lord, shall be saued.

The word translated 'name' can be literal (the word used
for the person) or figurative (the power & authority of the
person). So we could say 'call upon the
    authority of the Lord'.

    Rom 10:9 (KJV1611 Edition):
That if thou shalt confesse with thy mouth the Lord Iesus,
and shalt beleeue in thine heart, that God
hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saued.

These are two different ways of saying the same thing.

Some say you have to repent before you are saved.
Yep. Some of us, probably all of us, had to
repent of our sins before we could call upon the Name
of the Lord (call Jesus 'Lord' while believing he died for
    our sins).

This verse says nearly the same thing:

    John 3:16 (KJV1611 Edition):
For God so loued ye world, that he gaue his only begotten Sonne:
    that whosoeuer beleeueth in him,
should not perish, but haue euerlasting life.

Romans 10:9 says it does--confess Christ as Lord and believe in your heart, etc.

Matthew 15:8 (KJV) This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with [their] lips; but their heart is far from me.

I agree. I see a difference in confessing in Romans 10:9 and professing as described in Matt 15:8.

I think the reason we were taught to go to verse 13 was to show assurance of Salvation.

    That verse is a promise.

Tim, that makes sense. Instead of using this verse to get to a sinner's prayer, maybe we just ought to read v. 13 and stop there.

Then one could base his assurance on the fact that he confesses Christ as Lord, rather than "I said the prayer."

I use both in conjunction with one another. Paul did. For assurance I use 1 John 5:13-15

    Have a great day!

Romans 10:10 says, "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." What if a person can't talk?

    V. 13 is a quote from Joel 2, of course. Peter used Joel 2 in his sermon at Pentecost, and he used it to preach salvation, including the verse in question. So I think it is very valid to use Rom. 10:13 to witness concerning salvation.

Having said that, I see nothing wrong with only using v. 10 when witnessing. Since there are many different types of people, God has given us many metaphors for salvation in the NT, many different ways to explain it: being born again, calling on the name of the Lord, believing, receiving, putting on the white robe of salvation, etc.

Surely a note would be okay, since God is the one Who invented writing!
