Robert Reich: ‘The Democratic Party Has Not Been in This Bad Shape Since the 1920’s’

Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” former Clinton administration Secretary of Labor Robert Reich said, “the Democratic Party has not been in this bad shape since the 1920’s.”

Reich said, “Right now, there is a disconnect, George, between a rather sclerotic Democratic apparatus which is in complete disarray. I mean the Democratic Party has not been in this bad shape since the 1920’s and a huge uprising at the grassroots, mostly against Trump. How can Tom Perez, can he actually utilize that, turn the Democratic Party from a vast fund-raising machine into a movement?”

“Hasn’t been done before very easily. you remember in the Vietnam war days, we had a huge uprising. but the Democratic Party had nothing to do with that. The thing that worries me most of all, if you look at the problems inside the Democratic Party, they have a lot to do with the same sort of populist uprising we’re seeing across the country, including the Donald Trump campaign.”

Actually, he said that the real problem is extreme inequality of wealth which was the driver behind Trump's popularity. It remains to be seen whether Trump will actually do anything about this especially given his choice of billionaires to be a part of his administration. I think he is still (as always) favoring the super-rich and his supporters as well as his opponents will see this clearly very soon.

Well. since there were MORE democrats reported as millionaires than republicans last election, does that mean they also funded trump? Would be OK when they got behind Obama and clinton?

Since 81% of those who identified themselves as "white evangelical Christians" voted for Trump, I would expect that many did. But the real problem in wealth inequality is not these who are "merely millionaires." It's the amount of wealth controlled by the super-rich multi-billionaires. In 2016 the 62 richest people in the world had as much wealth ans the bottom 50% of the world combined.

So you say that Trump hasn't appointed all billionaires? That's easy to check. Let me tell you about google.

Donald Trump's Cabinet richest in U.S. history, historians say

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/donald-trump-cabinet-richest-in-us-history-historians-say/
Income inequality helped elect Donald Trump — and would grow wider under his policies
Some of the world's top researchers on income inequality — who presented a new paper on the topic Tuesday — say American economic anxiety and the growing gap between the rich and poor helped put President-elect Donald Trump on a path to the White House. Those same economists now warn that Trump will likely make the problem worse.

"The anti-establishment mood we have seen in this election — [Vermont Senator Bernie] Sanders on the left, Trump on the right — is in part the consequence of an economy that has stopped working for too many," said University of California at Berkeley economics professor Emmanuel Saez, who co-authored the paper with Capital author Thomas Piketty and economics professor Gabriel Zucman, also of Berkeley.

Saez, Piketty and Zucman's paper, presented at the City University of New York, found that income inequality has reached record levels: Since 1980, the average adult in the United States saw pre-tax income grow about 60% — but if you look at the poorer half of all pre-tax incomes, that growth virtually disappears. In fact, for those "bottom half" adults, pre-tax income has been flat at roughly $16,000 a year in 2014 dollars.

Put another way, in 1980, the richest 1% of Americans earned about 27 times more, pre-tax, than the poorest 50% of U.S. adults. Now, the top 1% makes 81 times what the bottom 50% makes.

Them having all that wealth not evil by itself, it is in how they use their wealth, either to benefit others, or just themselves!

Compare that with Dems, who ALWAYS want to use TAX $, rather than pull the shekels from their OWN pockets!
Pears to be a bit of hypocricy in the Dems philosophy, do it not???

Absolutely. But remember what Jesus said to the rich young ruler.

[Mat 19:20-24 KJV] 20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? 21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go [and] sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come [and] follow me. 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. 23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. 24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

The real question is who or what is the master of your life, Jesus or someone/something else.

True, but why don't the Dems focus on those in their own ranks worth as much as trump or is it just republicans are all evil using their money?

And they didn't learn a thing. Look who the finalists were for head of the DNC. Both left wing wackos.

Just as it did under Obama.

Income inequality is a myth. First, incomes do not need to be equal so the premise of the statement is ridiculous. Second many of those who perpetuate this myth have some of the top tiers of income in the country. Third, it is propaganda designed to gain control of wealth and place it where they want it to be, which by the way is not in the hands of middle calls income folks.
