Romney is fast rising as a serious contender

By Peter S. Canellos, Globe Columnist | December 12, 2006

WASHINGTON -- Until very recently, Governor Mitt Romney has been a long shot preparing for a race -- the Republican presidential primaries -- that almost always goes to the favorite.

But through shrewd moves and good luck, Romney has steadily risen through the ranks of GOP prospects. Now, almost everyone in Republican politics ranks Romney as the second-likeliest nominee, behind Senator John McCain of Arizona.

It is God who raises men up and brings men down for His own purposes, it will not be "luck" or "shrewd moves" by men. I pray that the believers of this wonderful land represent their Lord Jesus Christ honorably at the voting polls. I cannot comprehend any disciple of Jesus Christ desiring to be led by an unbeliever. I wonder, would Paul or Peter ask a unbeliever to be their representative? :tear:

    God Bless!

We will be voting for the president of the United States in 2008 - a secular position. We will not be voting for a pastor - a church position.

Besides, you don't know what is inside of Mitt's heart anymore than I know what is inside of your heart.

Very true, but this point is mute. The fact remains that we are ambassadors for Jesus Christ and should only ask for believers to represent us in government.

He openly confesses that he is a mormon. Mormonism worships "another Jesus" created by Joseph Smith with the satanic angel moroni. Would this not make a believer cringe at the thought of asking him to represent him??

    God Bless!

How would this be any different than voting for someone who claims to be a Baptist but doesn't live it (e.g. Carter or Clinton, both of whom have glaring moral inconsistencies in their personal lives)?

How would this be any different from G.W. Bush who claims Christians and muslims worship the same God?

==I doubt that position has any New Testament support at all, but I am open to your ideas.

==It makes me cringe no more than at the thought of having the universalist, George W Bush, represent me. Or, for that matter, Thomas Jefferson or John Adams (neither of whom held to orthodox Christian theology).

If you only vote for true believers then, sad to say, I doubt you vote that much.

I didn't bring this up for two reasons. First, this is a Baptist Board, and so I brought up those who claimed to be Baptist. Second, because I think Bush's testimony is a bit clearer and he is more consistent with it so far as I know than these others were. There is no doubt that he has sinned in some of his actions, and done some things that are questionable. His statement about worshiping the same God is clearly wrong, but I seriously doubt that Carter or Clinton would disagree with him. I think it may be the product of politics, or may be just being untaught. I have no idea. But in any case, none of that is particularly troubling since we are electing a president, not a pastor.

Can I get a Scripture for this?

The difference would be that a believer is a sinner saved by grace and a non-believer is a sinner unsaved. However, moral inconsistences should also be a factor in choosing a reperesentative.

One claims to be a believer and one declares to follow moroni which blantantly shows lack of a rebirth. Bush is obviously ignorant of scripture concerning nonbelievers worship, but it doesn't make him a false convert. On the other hand Romney openly confesses his false religion.

#1 Then you would have good reason to not vote for any of these men. #2 One can only judge a person from what they see and hear from that person. A confessing Mormon is a no-brainer.

    Sure.

"Now then we are ambassadors for Christ" (2Cr 5:20)

"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God."(1Cr 10:31)

I don't think asking a nonbeliever to represent you brings glory to God, do you?

It amazes me that any believer whom has studied God's Word to show thyself approved would come to the conclusion that it is ok to seperate their civil life apart from their spiritual life. Can anyone show me this in scripture?

    God Bless!

The verses you posted are completely true. The problem is they do not support your position. Have you studied those who were in control of the Gov't during the early church and even in Jesus time?

There is no Scripture that tells us we are only to vote for a believer in an elected postion.

Now, if that is your position that is completely your right. Just don't try and make it Biblical.

Sorry brother. This scripture has nothing to do with seperating your spiritual life with your civil life. The question was whether or not one should pay taxes and Jesus said give the government what they ask for in money.

Can you find an applicable scripture?

    God Bless!

I have not studied those who were in control during the early church. And I don't see how it matters here in this discussion.

The scripture I gave absolutely supports my position. Can you give another explanation for "whatsoever ye do"? Is voting something ye do?

I guess if you choose to look for exact words like "vote". But if you understand "whatsoever ye do" then that covers voting, correct?

By the way, is there scripture that states "do not smoke cigarettes? Let's not get legelistic. It is the spirit of the law and "discernment" is what is required.

    God Bless!

Do you represent(this is what an ambassador does) Jesus Christ when you vote(this falls under whatsoever ye do) and bring glory to God? Does voting for a nonbeliever bring God glory or not?

    Simple questions from sound scripture!

    God Bless!

There is no need for one since smoking cigarettes is not a sin.

I believe it would be benificial for the voters to know what Romney believes in concerning prophets and angels.

    Testimony of the prophet Joseph Smith;

"While I was thus in the act of calling upon God, I discovered a light appearing in my room, which continued to increase until the room was lighter than at noonday, when immediately a personage appeared at my bedside, standing in the air, for his feet did not touch the floor".

"He had on a loose robe of most exquiste whitness. It was a whiteness beyond anything earthly I had ever seen; nor do I believe that any earthly thing could be made to appear so exceedingly white and brilliant. His hands were naked, and his arms also, a little above the wrist; so, also, were his feet naked, as were his legs, a little above the ankles. His head and neck were also bare. I could discover that he had no other clothing on but this robe, as it was open, so that I could see into his bosom".

    More to come...it gets better!

OK, so as long as you believe you are doing good then it is good. I preferr to call on God and study his word to get a good answer.

Hey, good answer! We agree on this one although most baptist will argue that it is indeed sin.

    God Bless!

I imagine that most folks on this board have a pretty good idea what Mormonism teaches. It is also irrelevant to selecting a president of the United States. What belief that is singularly Mormon would affect a decision that a President Romney would make regarding public policy?
