In a desperate attempt to hold on to power, the Republicans have decided the only way is through the gutter...

Republicans are planning to spend the vast majority of their sizable financial war chest over the final 60 days of the campaign attacking Democratic House and Senate candidates over personal issues and local controversies, GOP officials said.
The National Republican Congressional Committee, which this year dispatched a half-dozen operatives to comb through tax, court and other records looking for damaging information on Democratic candidates, plans to spend more than 90 percent of its $50 million-plus advertising budget on what officials described as negative ads.

Get ready for some really sleazy political ads this fall.

If this is true, then we'll probably also get a bellyful of whining that this is what the Democrats are doing - if the past is a predictor of the future.

If they keep it up long enough, hopefully people will realize the GOP is not about solutions, but about slander and demonization. Anything to stay in power.

In spite of some evidence that people are increasingliy revolted by attack ads, the republicans don't have much else going for them. They need something to take people's minds off the way things are going for America.

    Interesting.

Republicans are finally going to use a play out of the democrat playbook.

    Oh well. Politics as usual.

Lee Atwater and Karl Rove... democrats?

Don't think anyone will buy that.

BTW, Atwater, on his deathbed repented for the sort of things he and Rove did and asked forgiveness.

I guess you haven't been listening to what Howard Dean has said in the past about Republicans.

You're aware enough, Galatian, to know that the Democrats/liberals are just as negative as the Republicans/conservatives in political ads.

Just curious, are you now morphing back into a Republican?

There will be no shortage of attack ads from either side. Both sides are guilty of doing it, both in paid advertising and in free advertising. One only need watch a few talk shows or interviews to see the constant negative attacks from Democrats on all manner of Republicans. Republicans do it as well.

But all personal issues aren't off limits. Personal issues do show character, and if someone has bad character then it should be exposed prior to voting.

People on here level cheap, sleazy attacks all the time against Bush and Rove and others. Yet they complain when someone else does it. It points out, yet again, the utter hypocrisy of some.

On this we agree, excect I don't think we should just sleep through it... I think it's time for us to honestly stand up and build a 3rd party that will honestly suppose our Christian causes...

Well, we will see. Here's a way to check it out. Keep a tablet with you when youi watch television. Whenver a political add comes on, make a box with "republican" or "democrat" in it as the case may be, and then put a check mark for every statement that is derogatory toward the other party or candidate. Add up the number of checkmarks for each party, each day, and keep a running total for the campaign.

I did that once. While both parties are pretty good at it, the Republicans are the kings of sleaze.

So if the GOP ads have 100 derogatory remarks and the Democrat ads have 90 derogatory remarks(or vice versa), you think that makes one party better than the other or less "sleazy"?

I know you have higher standards than that, Galatian.

This and other threads point to one conclusion. Both parties are rotten to the core, and have a focus on power, not the welfare of the American people. When are we going to say enough already, dismantle the parties and start over. Lets get real, 300 million Americans, some quite bright with a nack for governing and common sense, and the last two finalists are Bush and Kerry, or Bush and Gore.

Yep. That would make the democrats 90% as sleazy as the republicans. Probably a touch high, but not outrageously so.

I do recognize degrees of evil exist.

Our new party would be just as jaded as the old ones in a few years, or sooner.

I know that sounds terrible, but power and politics eventually corrupts even those with the best of intentions.
