SARS: U.S. adds Toronto to list of hot spots

    The U.S. government has issued a blunt health alert for air travellers from Toronto, warning they may have been exposed to SARS while in Canada.

    The number of probable and suspected cases in Ontario yesterday rose by six, helping push the national total to 316. Of those, 259 are in Ontario, the rest in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

    There have been 14 deaths in Canada, most elderly and all suffering from other ailments.

    We have several confirmed cases in Illinois also. Mostly in the Chicago area from people being in contact with others who had been in China.

    However, these people are still touching other people who did NOT have contact with the person from China. As a result, SARS is spreading everywhere at an alarming rate and there is still NO CURE.

    Do we need to quaranteen the whole world for our own safety? :confused:

    Toronto is the center of the biggest SARS outbreak outside of Asia, where the pneumonia-like illness originated. More than 250 probable or suspected cases have been reported in the Toronto area.

    SARS has killed 14 Canadians, all in the Toronto area. There was also word yesterday that a nurse from Toronto who was diagnosed with SARS while visiting the Philippines has now died.

    Also, 3 Canadian children hospitalized in Australia earlier this month probably had SARS, the government told the World Health Organization today.

    The World Health Organization issued a global alert Wednesday for travelers.

    "Today, we're recommending that people who have unnecessary travel to Shanxi, to Beijing and to Toronto postpone that travel if possible because, as was the case for Hong Kong and Guangdong, these areas now have quite a high magnitude of disease, a great risk of transmission locally -- outside of the usual health workers -- and also they've been exporting cases to other countries," said Dr. David Heymann, WHO's communicable diseases chief.

    Update on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

    April 22, 2003

    DR. GERBERDING: [In progress] 109 case of SARS internationally that meet the probable case definition, plus 39 cases in the US that meet the probable case definition. WHO is also reporting a total of 229 deaths and a case fatality rate of 5.9 percent. Looking at SARS from the international perspective we remain sobered by the ongoing transmission in Hong Kong, China, and probably Singapore.

    We also see countries where there has been at least some successful containment and looks like progress is being made in a number of fronts in that regard. Here in the United States we are continuing to cast a very broad net in terms of decisions about isolation.

    So although we have distinguished between probable and suspected cases in our reporting format, we are continuing to recommend the same standard of isolation for both suspect and probable case to be sure that we get everybody properly isolated as early as possible in the course of their illness and do everything we can to prevent transmission to others.
