The SBC has pass a ressolution on the CSA Flag.

"The convention adopted late in its afternoon session a resolution that urged "brothers and sisters in Christ to discontinue the display of the Confederate battle flag as a sign of solidarity of the whole body of Christ, including our African American brothers and sisters.""

Actually, this was a compromise from the original resolution. Click here for link

So if you are SBC, what are your thoughts?
Will your church act on the issue?

Our church is only 65 years old or so, but I did attend an older IFB church prior that had CSA soldiers in the graveyard.

Personally, the only CSA flag that I can remember owning was painted atop my General Lee matchbox car. Yeeeeehaw!!

Except that is not the Confederate Battle Flag. It is the flag of Army of Northern Virginia.

And remember, the so-called "Confederate Flag" only flew for 4 years. If we want to ban a flag we should ban the US flag, which flew over a slave nation for 85 years!

And does this idiotic resolution mean the SBC is going to refuse the money from all SBC churches in the state of Mississippi? After all, look at the State Flag of Mississippi!

Virtue signaling of the highest degree. This is setting a dangerous precedent to side with the "nice" sounding side of a debate rather than what is most rational.

The battle flag is a symbol of the confederacy and the confederacy was founded on a righteous opposition to infringement of states rights, which we continue to see the ill-effects of today.

What a bureaucratic and asinine issue to even address, doesn't this level of micromanagement undercut the emphasis of autonomy of the local church the SBC is supposed to be the leading denomination for?

How many stars are on THAT flag? Who is flying it?

If they fly that flag, then yep.

When loyalty for a flag is greater than for Christ then we are not living a Christ life. Paul said if meat offend my brother I will not eat meat. The confederate flag offends some brothers so I think it is clear what should be done. No confederate flag!

I agree that it is a stupid resolution that will be largely ignored. While I think that it is inappropriate to fly the "confederate flag" as it is to many a sign of offense and hatred (regardless as to intent or "true meaning", the flag rightly or wrongly is a barrier when it comes to dealing with some people), it seems to me that the SBC is not only overstepping on the issue but it is failing to focus on what matters. The SBC should not have concerned itself with forming a resolution to deal with people flying a flag.

So do you also think it is inappropriate to fly the American flag because, to many, it is a sign of offense and hatred? trample flag.jpg torn flag.jpg

My patriosm is secondary to my faith, if that is what you are asking.

And no, I don't think it inappropriate to fly the flag of the nation in which you reside. I do think, however, that liberty of action expressed in such a way as to be a stumbling block between the lost and the gospel is not Christian liberty.

What I am saying is that we have to be mindful not to get caught up in poilitical issues and situations to such a degree that we sacrifice the priority of gospel witness and gospel proclamation. And yes, here I would include flying that flag which I love and for whose nation I gave 23 years of my life in her service.

I know next to nothing about the Confederate flag... Only that there is one... When I went to fight in Vietnam my mindset was fighting for God and country... While I was defending my country and defending and protecting the freedom of the faith of my God I felt so dear... At times being a strong man of faith I wanted at times to strangle those who were desecrating and burning the flag I was fighting for and spitting in the face of those who gave their lives to defend it for the Christian liberty we now enjoy... To those who served you know!... To others now you know how some of us felt... Brother Glen

For many (I believe most) of us who grew up with the "confederate flag" it was to us the "rebel flag". It had and has (for this group) nothing to do with racism but was a part of our culture and "southern pride". But to many it represents racism and to some it symbolizes their own racist beliefs. At the end of the day it is just a flag and not a "right" or "liberty" worth standing for if doing so becomes a barrier to evangelism.

I will add, thank you for your service. What you fought for, however, was not Christian liberty as such liberty is independent of civil rule (Paul had Christian liberty under the civil authority of Nero). That does not change the fact that I am grateful for your service and sacrifice.

Thanks for that information Brother Jon but being from California the only time I saw the confederate flag was either in a book, a movie or on General Lees (Dukes Of Hazzard)... Brother Glen
