SBC Author Clayton Sullivan?

    I had the oppurtunity to call into Borders Bookshop yesterday and came across a book called "Rescuing Jesus From Christians". It is written by Clayton Sullivan who is described as being a Biblical Scholar and minister of the Southern Baptist Convention in the U.S.

    The content of his book certainley looked interesting. Yet when I picked it up today to have another look at it, I found this comment written on the back of it, which sounded ok untill I read who authored that comment

    - Highly Readable, this book is designed to force Christian leaders into a new honesty and the Christian Church into a New Reformation. It challenges deeply the formulas of traditional orthodoxy, but does so from quoting from the very sources from which Orthodoxy claims its authority. Sullivans words should be heeded by all seekers of truth. - John Shelby Spong.

    Is Clayton Sullivan a Conservative, a Moderate or a Liberal? Does the Southern Baptist Convention endorse his ministry?

    If his ministry is anything like that of Spong, I can tell you the SBC does NOT endorse it.

    It sounds to me like he probably attends a church that maintains dual membership with the SBC and the CBF, and the sooner he leaves the SBC, the better.

    I searched the CBF website and found no reference to him at all. Here is what his publisher's site has to say

    Clayton Sullivan is a Baptist minister with many degrees from many places, and thirty years as a professor of philosophy and religion, U. of Southern Mississippi.

    The Southern Baptist Convention does not endorse anyone's ministry---nor does it endorse anyone's books, tapes, CD's, DVD's!

    Whether you want to admit it or not, they most certainly do through Lifeway Publishing and Lifeway Christian Bookstores.

    Well, that wouldn't be the first publishing mistake, I heard or read that Focus on the Family rejected publishing Veggie Tales when it first came out.

    Regardless of what each of us think of the SBC, we must give them a round of applause here, if what you say is true.

    Why do so many Baptists wish to do hallow this book of “works”, “The Purpose Driven Life”? It sounds good as we are saved to “good works”, but this book to me tries to force works upon us, which smacks of those under a “schoolmaster”. The SBC is more than just trying to make money. Christian faith, ituttut

    If their goal was money, then I'm certain they were sorry. I'm glad LifeWay could at least draw the line somewhere.

    As far as Veggie Tales...as far as cute little animated shows I guess they're okay. They're at least entertaining, but most families are probably better off spending their money on something else.
