SBC Ethics Czar Faces Plagiarism Charge

There are many people in the SBC who have been asking for his resignation or retirement for a long time now. He's a blight on the convention.

He's sold out our convention to the RNC for a mess of pottage.

Another apology from the embattled head of the SBC's political wing (ironically named the 'Ethics' commission), this time for the substance of the plagiarized broadcast:

The Southern Baptist Convention’s top ethicist issued two apologies yesterday – one for reading a Washington Times column on his radio show without proper attribution and the other for the message it contained.

Land wrote the Rev. Bryant Wright, the denomination’s president.

“I am writing to express my deep regret for any hurt or misunderstanding my comments about the Trayvon Martin case have generated,” he wrote. “It grieves me to hear that any comments of mine have to any degree set back the cause of racial reconciliation in Southern Baptist or American life.”

His earlier remarks were criticized for alienating African-Americans, a group Southern Baptists have been trying to court

Pretty much knocks out charges of plagiarism. Of course the main critic was from Baylor so I am not surprised that such a charge came out like this.

Uh, no it doesn't and Land and everybody but you knows it, that is why he apologized, or whatever you call this "I'll try better" thing that he did.

The swipe at Baylor is funny, ignorant and lacking any true thoughtfulness, but still funny.

I'm betting Land will in short order want to "spend more time with his family".

And it surprises me not that you want to condemn an SBC Leader.

Unless I'm missing something, It sounds like Land Read a quote on-air without verbaly citing the source, but posted the source on his website. It could have been intentional or unintentional, but it doesn't really matter. There's nothing that's really big news here.

The bigger problem is why he feels the need to attach Obama on simple sympathetic remarks he made about a Black boy's death. If he want's to speak as a voice for evangelical chrsitians, or SBCers, he needs to stick to the Obviously biblical issues such as abortion, and the freedom to worship God according to the Bible...If he's not doing that, he's not doing us (SBC) any good, and needs to find someone else to pay his salary (which no one knows how much it is, by the way).

I would "condemn" anyone who was being less then forthcoming, not just SBC leaders.

It's not that he read a line or two, he read whole paragraphs (more the one) as if it was his own work, commentary. Now I don't care for the SBC, but surely you understand that you can't read someone else's work as your own regardless of where your allegiances lie.

Note, if not a big deal, if he didn't do anything wrong, why the apology? He either did something wrong in reading someone else's work or he has apologized for something he didn't do. Either way not exactly model behavior for the head of a denominations ETHICS department now is it!

Looked this up...it sounds like someone is reaching here to destroy Land....I have no problem with the comments he made he is correct at calling out Obama, Sharpton, Jackson et. al. for this....and I doubt he intentionally "plagiarized" If it was a column by Jeff Kuhner, in a nationally recognized newspaper...Land would know full well that he would be found out if he "plagiarized" intentionally. This appears to be a simple oversight.

Here is the problem, he has a doctorate. He should know better. He is in charge of ethics, He should know better. In the academic world, and you use someone else's thoughts, you give credit. Dr. Land didn't.

The thing is, its a live radio show... he could have simply forgotten to mention where the words came from. Or He might have decided not to say them. We will never know...It doesn't matter. He needs to go anyway.

Does anyone else find it funny that the title of this is calling Dr. Land the "Ethics Czar" as if he has any power over the 40,000+ sbc churches other than influence. I bet he didn't know how much power he actually had.

Ethics Commission trustees' attempt at damage control:

http://erlc.com/article/statement-from-erlc-trustee-executive-committee/

Dr. Land has admitted that he quoted sections of articles related to the Trayvon Martin matter in his Richard Land Live! radio broadcast without giving clear and proper credit to the authors of those articles. We understand that additional instances of this kind in connection with the Richard Land Live! program may come to light. . . .he could, and should, do a better job in this area. . . .the Chairman has appointed an ad hoc committee to investigate the allegations of plagiarism and recommend appropriate action to the Executive Committee. We, of course, expect full cooperation with this investigation from all of our staff and we pledge to take all necessary action to address any wrongdoing that may be discovered.

It's time, well it's been long since time, to shut down the ERLC and Executive Committee of the SBC...only permit the IMB, NAMB, and Lifeway to exist as agencies.

I would wonder if he failed to cite sources or did someone else write his message for him.
