Why is it that they are so reluctant to do what is right when it comes to educating children in a godly manner? I can only think of one reason. Pulling children out of public school will pull mothers out of the workplace to be homeschoolers which will cut the weekly offerings in half. What else can explain sending innocent children into a lions den to be 'lights'?

It is not the place of the SBC to instruct families how to educate their children. Each family must decide what is best in their own situation.

And your thought that it will cut weekly offerings is absurd!

    I agree PastorSBC

In this part of the world we have many many fine teachers who are Christians - we need to be helping those teachers as much as we can. The Christian kids in our church are truly lights at their schools, we have athletes, band members, cheerleaders and great athletes. I hate to think where our schools would be without them! We have had many graduates of our public schools go on to great colleges and following that up with seminary, pastorates and missions

Why is it absurd? It's simple math. Two incomes = two times the tithe.

I agree 100%. Is it me or is our convention moving in a direction of a centralized power? They seem to trying to take more and more control over peoples lives. I believe our Baptist fore-bearers would turn over in their grave at the attack on the priesthood of the believer.

I'm looking for an explaination, brother. Is there a better answer than the love of money? I'm all for having a positive impact on the world, but I don't see the schools getting brighter for all the lights that are supposed to be shining there. It's time for people to do whats right for their children instead of their pocket books. But in the last days the hearts of the fathers will not be toward the children.

You got an explanation, you just don't like it.

It is not the job of a denomination to tell individual families how to educate their children.

Then the individual churches should pull their children out if the denomination won't recommend it.

Whether that's the reason or not is only speculation, but you cannot argue that the giving will be much lower with half the income. I live in a place with many minimalists, many of whom choose to live without running water or electricity. There's no shortage of food, but there certainly isn't a lot of money to give to the church.

It is not the job of the local church to pull children out of schools. It is an individual family responsibilty.

It is the responsibility of the church to preach the whole counsel of God. Churches should not dismiss scriptures as old fashioned or outdated or un-important just because it will cause people to complain that the church is in their business. Churches ought to be involved in a family's business. I agree that there is a line, but making a recommendation that people take their children out of public school is not crossing it.

There is nothing wrong with children going to a public school. Not all parents are equipped to homeschool, nor called to do so. I wish all children could have a Christian education, but pulling them out of public school wont guarantee them that. And you cannot say that parents who wont pull them out are greedy.

Where does scripture mandate that we take our kids out and homeschool?

Churches should teach the whole counsel of God and support the parents in raising their children, but they should never try to take the place of the parents. In our church we have several who home school, some who Christian school and some who public school. We talk about all these and their strengths and weaknesses, and yes they all have weaknesses. Finally though it is the parents who have been given by God the responsibility for raising their children. The church does not exist to tell people how to raise their children, but to teach them about God and His principles for life and then each of us as priest before God follow His Spirit as He implants His Word in our lives.

James, you cannot lump all public schools together. There are many that are bad. But there are many that are doing a good job. The local school district where my daughters attend has a mature Christian for Superintendent. All the principals are strong Christians (including the High School principal who is a wife of one of the deacons at my church). The School Board President is a deacon in my church. We have many strong Christians who are teachers. So not all public schools are bad.

    1 Timothy 5:14
14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

    Titus 2:5
5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

The bible says that women are to be keepers at home and guide the house. How do we justify sending the wife to an office while the house gets guidance from the public school system?

Any way, I have to leave for home, so I'll be back tomorrow to discuss.

I disagree here. The Bible has a lot to say about how to raise our Children in the fear of the Lord. If we, therefore, are to faithfully preach the whole Word of God, we will be telling parents how to raise their children. I do agree, however, that the Bible does not address the issue of where your children should go to school, and therefore, this is really none of the Churches business to tell parents how to educate their children. But, one other point to keep in mind is that this resolution did not tell parents to pull their children out of Public Schools en mass. What it did was encourage parents to start formulating a plan for them to do so if the need were to ever arise. There are some very good Public Schools out there. There are also some horrible Public Schools out there. We, as parents, need to evaluate where our local schools are and make some decisions from there. I know that my family is personally taking the advice of this resolution to heart and making plans already before my son is even 3. Most of the elementary schools around here seem to be ok from what I have seen. Most of the problems seem to begin in Middle School. I realize that a lot could change in the next 8 years. I think it is, however, wise to make plans for the worse and rejoice if it ends up for the best.

lol, well, many women are keepers at home and send their children to school. Many are also blessed to be able to teach their own children at school while investing in the lives of other children as well. The scriptures you posted are meaningful, but they dont mandate homeschool. Have a safe trip!

    Tater,

My wife is one of those mothers who has the joy of having her son at the same school where she teaches. He is not in her class yet, but he will be in another 2 years.
