So that no can accuse me of only "picking" on President Bush, read about what a prominent New York Democrat is said to have done(and I have no reason to doubt the author):

John C. Whitehead seems to be a Conservative (booster of the military-industrial complex) Democrat of some repute, judging by his page on SourceWatch (linkie). Eliot Spitzer is the NY State Attorney General, also a Democrat, but less conservative. He may run for NY Governor next election (ambitious politician).

    Mr. Spitzer denies the allegations.
This story isn't played out yet. It is too soon to tell what all the facts are and how they fit together.

The bar has been lowered. Who is suprised that others would do it, if the WH is doing it?

As Ken points out, it's not only a republican problem.

it's not only a republican problem.
That superminimizes it. It is a problem far more in the Dem party,

This is not elementary school. It adds nothing to the debate to shout, "Your worse!", "No, your worse!", "No, your worser!", "Well, your double worser!".

The Democrats are not in control of the White House or the Congress.

All political parties need to be called on the carpet for any corruption within their ranks.

Folks who think that the GOP is God's party and/or that the GOP is purer than the wind-driven snow need to take a reality check.

    </font>
Pointing out inaccuracies is perfectly valid. The Dem's have raised the level of lying to new levels during President Bush's administration.
    Talk about schoolyard.

Talk about schoolyard? Hillclimber, your attitude toward Democrats is nothing but schoolyard.

I believe you actually believe that people who are Republicans are superior to anyone who is a Democrat.

Either you are mentally challenged, or you are filled with hate toward Democrats, or possibly both.

I once respected the Democratic party. Back when they seemed to stand for good things, like a strong military, family values, and the like. People like JF Kennedy, and Zel Miller and Joe Lieberman. My distrust of the current Dem's comes from them refusing to take their party back from the far out leftists, that have had no other plan for the nation or world other than destroy GWB. John Kerry spent a whole campaign based on negativity, with not a single plan, for taking the country forward, just negativeness. That is my attitude toward your party. I recognize the need for a strong 2 party system, that helps prevent excesses by either one. It is just that the Dem. party is now blinded by a single purpose leadership. Get GWB

I have learned one thing about definitions: "denied threatening" does not mean the same thing to a politician that it means to a regular person.

The problem with the Republican Party is two fold: One they are liking the rich guys a little 'too' (IMHO) much, and for some unknown reason they are the (almost) only politicians that have dirt for people to reveal days before an election. It is as if the ghost of that Watergate engine was actually keeping dirt on the Republicans (or, maybe just on all Americans, but only leaking on Republicans).

I would think that you would also question a politically savvy person under indictment who runs a PR campaign against the AG.

I still maintain that it is too soon to tell where the truth lays. Maybe Spitzer is an evil, crazy person, more likely not*. This is not a disinterested party making the accusation, but he has impressive backers, such as Mario Cuomo. It's an interesting story (thanks, KenH for posting it) and I have no idea how it will turn out....although I would put my money on secret deals if I were a betting sort of person.

*I haven't heard any other stories even hinting at this kind of behaviour from Spitzer, so far.

I don't get over here enough. I was cutting a switch to take hillclimber to the woodshed, and discover several people have already handled the chore.

The only plan the democrats have had for years is a secular-socialist country, sort of like the old Soviet Union.

I am old enough to remember 30 years ago when republicans were almost non-existent in Texas and there were two kinds of democrats, liberals and conservatives. I’m sure my parents voted democrat most of the time and I know my in-laws did and still do. My mother- in-law is the quintessential “yellow dog democrat”.

Today, in Johnson County, there is only one democrat holding public office. Several of our elected officials are former democrats. A liberal Texas democrat of thirty years ago would not even be allowed in the doors of the 2004 Democratic National Convention. He would be an outcast in his own party. Ask Zell Miller.

How did it get this way? When did the party of FDR, JFK, and Harry Truman pack up and leave Texas? How did the measure of whether or not you were a democrat come down to the single “litmus test” of where you stood on abortion? How did democrats in this country come to hate our president so much that they let the likes of Michael Moore take over their party? In time of war, does political power mean more to democrats than having a civil election process that airs honest differences without degenerating into the mud slinging slime fest that the last election was?

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m not going to pull any punches here. The last election was the nastiest election in my memory. It was so nasty that we ccouldn't hear about the issues that confront us. However, it didn’t become that way overnight. It’s been going on for a long time and I’m going to lay it squarely at the feet of the Democratic Party! Here’s why.

Ted Kennedy says the Iraq War “was made up in Texas” for political gain. House minority leader Nancy Pelosi calls the President “an incompetent leader” with “ no judgment” who “has on his shoulders the deaths of many more troops.” Introducing Kerry, Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley says the Bush administration worries him more than Al Qaeda does. Howard Dean advanced the theory that President Bush had advance knowledge of the 911 attacks. Former Vice President Al Gore screams that President Bush “betrayed this country”. Gore also calls the military’s prison system “Bush’s gulag”. Kerry’s national security advisor Rand Beers says the President under funds homeland security because the most targeted areas are in democratic states. And Democratic Party chairman Terry McAuliffe says the President was AWOL from the National Guard.

On a more direct candidate-to-candidate basis, John Kerry attacked President Bush’s National Guard service three times in one interview. He said the President “can’t even answer whether or not he showed up for duty in the National Guard”; “can’t even show or prove that he showed up for duty in the National Guard”; and “has yet to explain to America whether or not, and tell the truth, about whether he showed up for duty.” Kerry also accuses President Bush of placing a “target” on the backs of U.S. troops

In addition to the yelps and squeals of the baying jackals in politics, wealthy democrats have given millions to so called 527 organizations for advertising. They spent $90 million running ads denigrating George Bush in one fashion or another up to and including comparing him to Adolph Hitler. John Kerry never got around to denouncing that particular ad. Multi billionaire George Soros pledged his entire fortune to ensure that Bush is defeated. He didn't keep his pledge. Michael Moore, the new mouthpiece for the Democratic Party, said the President “deserted” from the National Guard. Kerry calls a group of “celebrities” the “heart and soul” of America after they call President Bush a “cheap thug who sacrifices our young”.

Underneath it all was the steady drumbeat of liar, liar, liar. George Bush is a liar! He’s lying! The President is lying. Proof wasn’t necessary but the beat went on. Liar, liar, liar. George Bush is a liar. The feeling by democrats is that, if they say it enough, people will eventually begin to believe it. Sadly, for those not paying attention, this tactic works.

On the republican side, the rhetoric was muted. Did they go after John Kerry? You bet they did! The record of the President and the voting record of a Senator are and should be fair game. They attacked Kerry’s voting record in the Senate. Each time they did, Kerry squealed that they were attacking his patriotism and reminded us all that he’s a Vietnam veteran. They attacked his plans for the future when they could find out what they were. No one in the republican campaign effort attacked Kerry’s military service, called him a traitor, or attacked his patriotism.

One lone anti-Kerry 527, the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth, attacked Kerry’s military service, his anti-war activities and their effects on Vietnam veterans and POW’s. He had made his Vietnam service the centerpiece of his campaign instead of his twenty years in the Senate. With less than a million dollars in advertising, they hit Kerry where he lived and turned his campaign on its ear. Kerry’s response was not to meet them head on. Instead we heard the same old drumbeat of liars, liars, liars. The Swiftees are liars. No rebuttal or proof. Just the drumbeat. Liars, liars, liars.

Late in the campaign, Kerry and his advisors decided that they can only catch up in the polls if they went negative. Imagine that!

Yes I long for the old Democratic Party. I long for the party that did not believe that profane “celebrities” are the “heart and soul” of America; the one that believed in supporting their president in time of war. Would the real American democrats please stand up and be heard?

The Swiftees were a part of the Republican campaign effort, despite the illusion of a Chinese Wall.

And I am glad that the Swiftees' efforts were the main ingredient in John Kerry's defeat.

    </font>
Your opinion is not backed up by the facts.

Even if it was, 90 million in anti Bush ads vs. 1 million in anti Kerry ads. It was a decidedly lopsided playing field.

The Bush campaign and its subsidiaries spent way more than $1 million in anti-Kerry ads.

Also, according to their own website the Swiftees raised more than $26 million dollars, not $1 million - SOURCE.
