If the report is true and presented honestly, then the principal is off base. One does not violate the separation of church and state by using the descriptive term "Christmas" to describe the holiday where Christians celebrate the incarnation.

The principal has overstepped his bounds and will likely be reigned in very quickly by the school district attorneys.

I spose it would be okay to say Merry Xmas. The atheists call us Xians. :(

Seems some people only have use for Christ when His Name is used as a swear word. [IMG]

I think x-mas is a good thing, if you read it properly. Some scholar hop in here and explain what it means, cuz I don't remember, lol. Someone told me last year. [IMG]

Why don't morons like this hit Halloween first? Our school was flooded with decorations, lesson plans were based around it for weeks, art was about it every day, it was ridiculous! I haven't seen anything related to Christmas so far this year, except the Santa shop fundraiser, where they take all the kids to the Santa shop and let them pick out presents for their family then send you the bill. If you don't send the money the kids don't get the stuff and they throw a fit. REALLY ticked me off last year because I had no clue they would do something like that!
Sorry, went off topic just a little, lol. But that really ticked me off!

They proper way to pronounce "Xmas" is "Christ-mas" and the proper way to pronounce "Xians" is "Christ-ians".

The "X" is actually the Greek letter "chi" which is shorthand for "Xristos" ("Christ" in Greek).

Abbreviating "Christ" as "X" is a historically Christian thing, not an athiest thing.

What can we do to get Christ back into Christmas, in our schools? I was at my son's Christmas program at his school, and not one song they sang was about the birth of Jesus. They were all about Santa. I'm looking for ideas to help with our schools.

Rick, donate the music. If you have a child willing to do a solo choose a song with him you'd like done and ask the music teacher if she would let him sing it.
Try not to get into the politics of it or they'll get all defensive. However, if he is told he can but must change the song THEN you can play the discrimination card.

Ah...so! Thanks Baptist Believer! So when athiests abbreviate Xians and Xmas, it is a Greek thing, not a denigration or ridicule?

Color me embarrassed for jumping to conclusions. :D

[IMG] They think they are dishonoring us, but they are not.

Lots of people don't understand it because they've heard that atheists spell Christmas that way... You are not the first and won't be the last. :D

Same thing here. They changed all the carols into shopping themes. I had to sit there and listen to the entire play. My daugther asked my on the way home why I didn't stand up at the end and clap and I asked her to tell my what the original words was to a song Joy to the World. Sad that it has done been replaced in her head with the one below so I refreshed her memory and she was shocked. She then understand why I had a problem with it because she just had the same problem. Since then she has re-learned the original again and I heard her singing it to herself.

    Example:
    Joy to the world
    The shoppings done

I guess I'm lucky. In the State of California, music teachers are told that if they're going to use sacred music for Christmas, they they also include secular music, but aren't required to "balance", for example, 1 secular piece for every sacred piece. The music teachers tend to choose their music according to their cultural or sociological significance (since music instruction is also an instruction of society). Making a long story short, most of the local public schools are very inclusive of sacred music in Christmas repertoire.

For the last 2 years my local Infants School play has been a mickey taking event.... last year they had the "Wise men" talking to each other and saying "shall we give Him a pair of socks?" and this year they had the little ones singing Happy Birthday Jesus..... Most of the mothers etc. were beaming at the rubbish which the children were saying/singing on both occasions. [IMG] If they must have these "Nativity " plays, why can`t they do them with some reverence. I voiced my opinion, and am probably known as an old fusspot, as the reaction I had was not favourable, it seems like entertainment is the idea, and not truth.

I don't have a problem with dramatized, modernized, and even humorous, nativity plays, specifically those in the young child age level.

My church has a christmas pageant, and there are three kings named Balthazar, Melchior, and Caspar, all three of which are fictional characters.

Marty: I applaude you for teaching your little one the correct verses of Christmas songs. Read 2 Tim. 3:13. It states that evil men shall get worse in the end times. I believe we are there when Christ is taken out of Christmas.
    Merry Christmas to All,
    Rick
