Scourge of Mercy?

Mark 15:14 Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.

15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

Why scourge Him? Pilate knew He was innocent and yet you whip Him? Was this just plain cruelty to please the mob or was it hoping He would die on the way or at best quickly on the Cross? Indeed, was it Pilate’s thought as an act of mercy knowing the excruciating agony on the Cross? Without a journal entry of Pilate, we can only speculate. Pilate worked so hard to free Jesus that it does seem that He would add more injury to one He knew to be innocent, but could not reject the demand of the mob agitated by the religious hierarchy. I hope that it was an act of mercy because of his cowardice did not free Jesus.
