Let's look at righteousness. Perhaps you think you are righteous because of
what Jesus did for you (giving you His righteousness), as appears to be the case here …
“And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Matt 25:46)
But, this is NOT the case … because as with everything else …
What was given to you when you were born again MUST be maintained (see the Note below).
People were righteous BEFORE Jesus came on the scene
“And they (Zacharias and Elizabeth) were both righteous before God,
walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.” (Luke 1:6)
“For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” (Matthew 9:13)
What you are doing (in obedience due to love and appreciation) is what Jesus is interested in!
For example … You are responsible for maintaining your righteousness …
“In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation
whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.” (Acts 10:34-35)
“… you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.” (1 John 2:29)
“Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous,
just as He is righteous.” (1 John 3:7)
“… so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.” (Romans 6:19)
“Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey,
you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether (slaves) of sin leading to (eternal) death,
OR (slaves) of obedience leading to righteousness?” (Romans 6:16)
Paul was talking purely theoretically (he actually was teaching and exhorting),
when he wrote, “… having become slaves of God,
you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.” (Romans 6:22)
If they really were slaves of God, etc., Paul wouldn't have written Romans 6!
Instead, because of their sinning, he was threatening them with eternal death!
Yes, Paul instructed the Christians in Rome to be slaves of God, slaves of obedience,
and slaves of righteousness … to be sanctified unto holiness, resulting in eternal life.
Hey, maybe they all did become slaves! ... 'Tis possible.
Note: Scripture also reveals the necessity for believers to …
do the will of God in various ways, maintain our faith until the end of our lives,
abstain from sin, confess and repent of sin, etc. to maintain our salvation!
IMO, some BACs are not as righteous as they think are!
Righteousness in the old covenant (just for interest sake):
Proverbs 10:16 • The labor of the righteous leads to life, the wages of the wicked to sin.
Ezekiel 33:18 • When the righteous turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity,
he shall die because of it.
Malachi 3:18 • Then you shall again discern between the righteous and the wicked,
between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him.
1 Kings 8:32 • justifying the righteous by giving him according to his righteousness.
Isaiah 56:1-2 • Thus says the Lord: “Keep justice, and do righteousness …”
How's this for a wise prediction (I don't prophesy): This will be another very ignored thread.
Hey! No biggie! I'm used to it.
