.... and there ain't no ice nor snow!!! :BangHead:

The National Weather Service scared us all to death ... is was like a panic in the grocery stores last night and we are all at home today looking at nothing but freezing temps, gray skies, and a few watery puddles.

I could be teaching math right now!!! :BangHead:

Here in Minnesota we call these weather people, "the Weather Terrorists", because they start telling us about the upcoming calamity days before it is supposed to happen causing people to panic and over prepare. You go to the grocery stores and they're so crowded you'd think the Russian ICBM's were just now arcing over the north pole. Then, when nothing happens people get ticked off.

Can't believe they've instilled the culture of weather fear in Louisiana.

Oh, BTW, 16th consecutive day of below zero weather here.

Well, I think one reason people are getting panicky here is because we have NEVER had a wintery season this cold and wet in decades.

We've had several days of temps in the 15-19 degree range since Christmas. And some of November - December - while not that cold was very cold 25-40 with much wind and dampness.

I know that doesn't sound terrible to some, but it's AWFUL for us who aren't accustomed to it.

And it's wet here and terribly windy. That wet and windy cold on days far below the freezing point is unnerving to us. We aren't used to it.

We are still under a severe winter storm "warning" until early tomorrow morning.

Unfortunately, when it turns to ice, you have a very short period of time before the roads are too bad as we saw last week or the week before in the south. If it will ice anytime today before 5 pm, it was the right choice to close the schools. They COULD have had an early dismissal but that still leaves staff to have to stay behind until it maybe is too late.

Hopefully, it's a case of crying wolf but if it gets to freezing rain there, be very careful!! Even here in NY it was a mess last week when we had the freezing rain. I STILL have ice on some trees from that storm and the storm that you have now will be bringing us a foot of snow in two days.

You have no idea how true your words are.

People here, including myself, have so much trouble when roads ice over. We just don't know how to maneuver in it - especially the black ice.

I'm talking multiple car pile ups, slips-down on your own carport, broken bones, dead plants, and more. We just don't know how to deal with it.

I would rather be safe than sorry and frankly, the chief of school bus routes confers with the superintendent and the sheriff's department to make these calls.

We'll just have to make-up our lessons when we go back.

I've now seen our temperature rise 60 degrees, and it remaines below freezing. Looks like I got another 8 inches of man-made global warming to shovel.

Well, that streak was broken this morning. It was 16 degrees outside. That's an improvement of 30 degrees over yesterday morning.

LOL. Nice brisk wind, as well. We had to put the heat lamp in the chicken coop.

That's gone, and we got the cloudy slushy weather that everyone loves so much. The roads are pretty much covered in ice, with puddles everywhere.

I spoke about 9 hours too soon!!!!

Electricity just came back on after about 12 hours off. Ice everywhere. About 25 degrees and although melting a little - predicted to re-freeze overnite.

Huge red oak down in my back yard. Will wait for warmer weather and hire someone to take care of that. A blessing it didn't hit anything. :godisgood:

Do you have a fireplace or wood stove??? If you do, get it chopped up for yourself!

Now that would freak me out. Below freezing and no electricity. What did you do for heat? Build a fire?

In bed last night? Several homemade quilts my grandmother sewed decades ago. Normally they stay displayed on quilt racks.

This morning and partial afternoon? Stayed at my parents who have gas heater in the living room - but no electricity to blow it so we all stayed in the living room.

    ...and good wool socks!

There is a great device called Mr. Buddy that is a propane heater that is designed to be run indoors. It's a GREAT emergency heat source if you have no fireplace or wood stove.

My business kept us working through the last storm.

We lost power at home on Wednesday of last week and didn't get it back till 6pm Saturday... things were a bit chilly.
I hooked up a generator so we had heat and a few lights.

...but didn't get internet back till yesterday - oh the horror!

    Tomorrow I have off!

Our office closed a noon today. No snow when I left but by the time I got home the roads were very slick.

    Office closed tomorrow.

I've got a 2-burner Mr. Heater (same thing as a Buddy, I think). But I don't have a battery powered CO2 detector so I'd be leery of bringing it indoors. Also have a fireplace.

Schools are closed but since we homeschool, my kids still have to do their work.

But I have two grown daughters. One is attending a local college (that is closed today) and working at an audiologist's office (her chosen field - will head to grad school next year) which may or may not be open. We're still waiting to hear. The oldest is off school today (substitute teacher) but is supposed to work at the grocery store in floral from 11 am to 8 pm today. However, I'm not sure how many people will be going into the grocery store to pick up flower for V-day! I'm hoping they call and say to stay home because honestly, we're getting hammered right now.
