The Second Vermont Republic is a peaceful, democratic, grassroots solidarity movement committed to the return of Vermont to its rightful status as an independent republic as was the case in 1791 and to support Vermont's future development as a separate, sustainable nation-state. Welcome to the future of Vermont. From 1777 - 1791, the citizens of Vermont governed themselves as an independent republic. As we enter the 21st century, Vermont Commons is an organization dedicated to the proposition that Vermonters should peaceably secede from the United States and govern themselves as an independent republic once again. We created this interactive site to encourage thoughtful participation from anyone interested in this endeavor.

Could Vermont survive economically as an independent nation-state?

Unquestionably. Of the 200 or so independent nation-states in the world, 50 of them have a smaller population than Vermont-608,000. Five of the ten richest countries in the world as measured by per capita income are smaller than Vermont-Liechtenstein, Iceland, Luxembourg, Bermuda, and Cayman Islands. Political independence is not a synonym for economic and political isolation. Over 600 Vermont firms export nearly 24 percent of the State's gross state product. We see no reason why this should change after independence.

Perhaps Vermont wouldn't have such a hard time negotiating for oil because Vermont hasn't gone around telling everyone else on the planet 'live this way or we'll bomb you'.

 

The United Nations has already taken care of that for us through Agenda 21. Their idea of good gas mileage is you and I pedaling our bicycle to work inside a campact and constantly surveilled city so you needn't worry much longer about the high price of gasoline or outbidding a tiny independent country like Vermont that would most likely reject Agenda 21 in favor of a constituionally limted and sovereign government.
