Senate committee passes bill allowing the Bible to be taught in Kentucky public schools

Proposed legislation would allow the Bible to be taught in Kentucky public schools.

The Senate Education Committee passed a bill Thursday that would require public schools to offer an elective class on the Bible.

Democrats say the Bible is critical to understanding the culture and history of the United States.

The Kentucky Council of Churches and ACLU say the bill hurts religious freedom.

The committee also passed a bill requiring students to pass a civics test before graduating.

Both bills now move to the State Senate

This will be opposed tooth and nail by Louisville press, and Louisville metro government eg Greg Fischer. And it is a sure bet the commonwealth's attorney general Andy Beshear (son of the two term Dem governor) would oppose any Bible reading in school.

And how long before the Muslims sue for equal treatment of the Quran?

And then the Satanists sue to allow the Satanic Bible in schools?

I see the point about others suing for "equal treatment" but as it stands now Christianity and the values associated with it has lopsidedly been removed and I feel it needs to back into the game especially when in comes to history and culture concerning the foundation of our nation. I'm all for a civics test before graduating to prove understanding of the source of our foundational values, which are/were indeed based on Christian values...

A little American pride involving some knowledge of the roots for a change couldn't hurt...

Agreed. This is opening a Pandora's box. Christians like this idea now but that other shoe will eventually drop.

Bingo. It is the church's job to teach the Scriptures---not the secular State. Nowhere in the Bible does God allow the Church to delegate this duty to any other institution.

So who's going to be "teaching" the Bible? Baptists? Methodists? Catholics? Jehovah's Witnesses? Christian Scientists?

What you will get will be "The Bible as Literature" or "Bible Stories" or some similarly watered-down curriculum that drains the Bible of its spiritual power. Or else teaching that may not agree with your own beliefs.

Just some basics on the principles this country was formed on being taught to our children would be nice. But I'm sure all the excuses to refrain from any Christian teaching whatsoever is deeply appreciated from those opposed to these basic values. Divide and conquer...

In my opinion it should be left to the different school districts. Some may not want it and others may. As far as who may teach on the Bible, the obvious answer would be for a local pastor to come into the classroom.

We need to spread or ideas as much as we can. Why yield to others to teach their worldview in the classroom? It based off US history, not Muslim history. Start fighting for our rights darn it, why do we as Christians lay down on the chopping block at every turn?

This is a hopeless mishmash. I think we should spread the gospel. But you want to teach a version of American history that ignores the warts. Shall we teach how "Christians" were complicit in any number of things that now we consider reprehensible?
