    Senate OKs partial birth abortion ban

    WASHINGTON — The Senate voted overwhelmingly Thursday to place the first federal restrictions on how women terminate their pregnancies since the 1973 Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal nationwide.

    By a 64-33 vote, senators approved a ban on a controversial procedure that opponents call "partial birth" abortion. The legislation is expected to pass the House next month, and President Bush said he will sign it. He called it "an important step toward building a culture of life in America."

    My concern with this is that, unless the verbage was changed from the last draft I saw, that POS's will no longer be allowed to be performed when it is necessary to preserve the health of a woman. During Clinton's presidency, he vetoed a bill because it did not contain such verbage. He wanted an exception for preservinge the life and/or health of a woman. The bill he vetoed only contained verbage with an exception of life.

    Good news!!! Congartulations to the Senate for this.

    IamBlessed16 started her post with the key words... "IT"S A START".

    Let's not let them off the hook on election day just for passing this...remember that there are still 3500 little ones going to their death each day. The politicians will hope that they have bought the pro-life vote for this one TINY deed. Let's not fall for it.

    Johnv, the current provision for the "health" of the mother is so broad it is useless. There are too many corrupt doctors with their own mindless interpretations that is nothing short of murder to render such language worthless.

    Useless or not, corrupt doctors or not, I personally feel it's a necessary provision. Better for the AMA (and COngress to follow) to define what constitutes an appropriate health provision, IMO, rather than remove it completely.

    Yes, of that I am aware. The concern is an exception for "preserve the health of a woman". Some want it, some don't. I suppose it's less of an abortion issue and more an issue of what constitutes "health of a woman".
