Just take whatever sermon you hear that's good enough to repeat---and IMPROVE on what you just heard!!

have a Thompson chain ref. bible just for such emergencys. always w/ prayer first for direction ,be instant in season & out of season,
besides what could possibly be wrong w/ doing , somthing like ;payday someday ! again?

 

I can understand people doing this; as someone
said, time is preecious. But at the church which
excommunicated me, they did this a lot! Some
would listen to old tapes of those preachers in
that organization they most admired. then get up
and copy them in style and material. I thought
it awfully silly.

Furthermore, this meant they did not study the
material--the Bible--they studied, instead, a
person's rendition of the Bible! Error, therefore,
was taught and retaught.

One man in particular was guilty of this. One
day, the preeaching schedule was confused, and
the scheduled speaker did not show up. This
man just laughed, said he had brought his note-
book of sermons he had heard most recently,
so he would just preach something from it, and
he did.

This was in a church in which they claimed to
be oracles of our God, speaking what the Holy
Spirit told them to say. Error from the pulpit
was NEVER either admitted or challenged, but
error upon error continued steadily and was
held like it was valuable. Preachers were not
to be questioned or second guessed. That
spoken from the pulpit was held as the word of
our God through His Holy Spirit. Sad.

I understand lack of time, but the Bible must be
studied and it must be dealt with at its deepest
level as each individual is able. If it is lack of
time, why not preach in series, studying each
small part as deeply and thoroughly as possible?

Off topic, but where did that come from? It was
a bit shocking to see it written! What is its
history? I can't remember. You are in Idaho; I
thought that was from Minnesota!

 

Ah! That's what it was! That little saying just
pops out of my mouth on occasion, and i could
never remember its origin! I knew, however,
that Ii had heard it on WCCO. Thank you!

In sermon prep, I start with the Bible itself and exegete the passage. Later, I read some exegetical commentaries to check my research and make sure I am not making mistakes. Then I start constructing the sermon. After I construct it, I read some sermons by others to see what they did with the passage. I never simply go to another person's sermon book and copy the outline and preach it, however.
