Dr Bob, I'd sure like to see your sermon notes on that one!

Nothing to terribly clever this year for me, just "Jesus - The Reason for Christmas."

In my church (IFB) on Sunday morning, Pastor preached from Luke 2 and Matthew 1, and didn't really give it a title- just a basic Christmas message. In the evening, he delievered a fairly short message because the choir gave a concert, but the message was His Unspeakable Gift, based on II Corinthians 9:15. [IMG]

I took as my text If "I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin." (John 15:22), and preached a sermon entitled "If Jesus Had Not Come!"

Basically I took the Lord's various statements on "I am come that . . ." and pointed out that these things would not have been true if Jesus had not come. A slightly different angle on the Christmas message.

Probably the most fun and inventive Christmas sermon title I preached was "Thank God for Levi's Genes!"

    FORGIVE US OUR CHRISTMASES
    Series: Advent 2002, #3
Introduction: Little boy was careful to say his prayers a Christmas neared. Like so many, he mixed up the words of the prayers a little. Our Father who art in heaven, Harold be thy name. Give us this day our jelly bread and forgive us our Christmases as we forgive those who Christmas against us.

The Christmas Season is sprinkled with two contrasting themes: “Hurry Up” and “Wait”. When these become out of balance, how distorted our view of the holidays will be. We look back on the millennia since Jesus came and wonder “How long?” before He returns.

HURRY UP, LORD – the earth needed your coming then and NOW

WAIT PATIENTLY – the Lord’s timing is perfect and everything will work out.

Illustration: Kids pray HURRY UP Christmas and get here. Mom and Dad say, SLOW DOWN and give us time to shop and wrap and decorate and get everything done.

A seven point sermon - how long did it last?

The week before Christmas was our Christmas program - one of our teens (Matt/Shinja) preached the sermon - the subject was how Christ's birth fulfilled O.T. prophecy. The message lasted (timed by wedge former) 7 minutes and 34 seconds - but Matt did an exceptional job. We are praying him into Bible School and the ministry.

The week after Christmas - just happened to be the last Sunday of the month - and I have one of my deacons - who happens to be an ordained minister - preach that Sunday each month. He is currently preaching through Joshua - and his text was when God told Joshua to have all the men circumcised. I'm not sure how we can fit that into Christmas - but sometimes it's best not to strain to hard to make a text fit an occassion!

Dan - haven't preached for the last two Sundays!

Hey, at 15 I preached in my home church. Stole the outline from Billy Graham's "Peace with God" book and doubt it lasted ten minutes. 9 points and I was "faster than a speeding bullet".

    Encourage him!

BTW, my Advent message (7 points) went about 40 minutes. These were not deep theological truths, so 3-4 minutes and a good story/illustration on each was plenty!

    We do encourage him!

We are very hopeful that the Lord will lead him into the ministry!
