To the administrators/moderators/owners of the Baptist Board,
I want to echo a complaint that I have seen others mention here lately. Is there anything that can be done at your level to block some of the sexually oriented pop-ups that are appearing lately on the board? I have tried to block them on my end and although my controls say they are blocked they are still getting through somehow. I know we can't always avoid this stuff in the world these days but it would be nice to be able to avoid it here if possible. Thanks.

I use this hosts file modification personally and at my client sites. Hope it helps: http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

Those only show up if you've been looking at "naughty" web sites.

just kidding. I second the use of AdBlock Plus. I never see any ads here.

I agree and have complained. Safari gets them as well.

Your hosts file should be /etc/hosts on a Mac. You need to login as admin to edit it or sudo in terminal.

I don't understand why one should go to that much trouble when Firefox or Chrome with Adblock are free downloads. Would you mind explaining what the advantages are to this method?

I haven't evaluated Adblock but it may work just as well.

I think the popups may depend on the websites your computer has been used for recently. For instance, my wife bought some dresses for my 2 and 4 year old grandaughters off the internet. The current popup ads are advertizing cute little girls dresses.

    Oh My!!!!!

    drfuss,
I wish you had phrased that differently!! People might get the idea that I been viewing porn or something to which I say,and God sees everything we ALL do,...NO! I'm just guessing but I am currently unemployed and have been doing daily job searches on-line since early June. As you can imagine, I have visited more than just a few "secular" websites lately in my job search. I can also tell you that the volume of "spam" in my mailbox has grown tremendously in the last few months and I have to delete much so maybe that has something to do with it. While we're at it, I'd appreciate everybodies prayers in regard to my job search. Pray the Lord will open the right door at the right time. I want to honor Him in all I do.

The ads have nothing to do with where you have been on your computer. The ads are generated by Google ads and the like. In order for the ads to be relevant, thus websites want them on their sites, the ads are determined by the content on the site itself. Baptist Board is a source of income for Andrew and was before he bought it from its original owner.

It is unfortunate that the simplest content can generate the most grievous ads. But that is the nature of those secular organizations. If you use a browser with an adblock addon you are sure not to have to deal with the ads.

We do our best to block ads when they are brought to our attention. Sorry for any trouble this causes and if you can post the URL to the Tech support forum we will block them.

We have already filtered out all the offensive categories but sometimes ads slip through because are miscategorized.
