Shays Hits Hard In Page Scandal

Invokes Chappaquiddick In Rebuking Farrell; Polls Show Issue Not Helping Democrats

    October 11, 2006
By DAVID LIGHTMAN, Washington Bureau Chief

WASHINGTON -- When the congressional page scandal broke last month, Democrats across the country saw a chance to lambaste Republican leadership - including Diane Farrell, who called on House Speaker Dennis Hastert to step down.

But when Sen. Edward M. Kennedy came to Connecticut last week to help her campaign, Rep. Christopher Shays hit back.

"I know the speaker didn't go over a bridge and leave a young person in the water, and then have a press conference the next day," said Shays, R-4th District, referring to the 1969 incident in which the Massachusetts Democrat drove a car that plunged into the water and a young campaign worker died.

"Dennis Hastert didn't kill anybody," he added.

    SNIP

"We don't know what he has or hasn't done," Shays said of Hastert. "But she had a fundraiser for Sen. Kennedy, and we know what he did."

Farrell was incredulous - "my jaw dropped," she said, when she heard Shays' comments, and she said Chappaquiddick had nothing to do with Hastert's current plight.

Oh yeah, the old "I'm rubber you're glue" offense aka "Tu quoque!" It's just a bit tired, don't you think?

I have to agree with Dasiy. Is this the best he can do to stand up for the people that hid the Foley incindent?

I mean, really! Just because someone didn't die, that don't make it any better. These people really are grasping at straws right now.

She was grandstanding a bit by calling for Hassert's resignation, but you're equating holding a fundraiser for a senator in good standing with participating in a coverup.

As was pointed out by Shays...

We don't know yet whether or not Hastert participated in a coverup. We do know Kennedy left a young woman to die in his car while he escaped and we do know he waited hours to report it.

It's a low blow, but Shays does have a point. Kennedy doesn't mind hitting below the belt whenever he gets a chance.

Sounds like plain ole dirty politics. Wait two years. Four years. We'll be nostalgic for these good times when the parties at least talked.

What about a good old fashion waterboarding? I hear that makes people talk and it's not only legal but fun to watch.

He'd get a promotion if he was only a loyal neocon.

Hey Poncho, funny that you should mention waterboarding. I've been wanting to get a waterboarding party goin on but looks like no one wants to show up for the fun. Politics is getting down and dirty in this last month of campaigning, should be interesting to see how well some of our fine and highly esteemed candidates hold up, in the end it will be left up to us to take out the garbage.

As long as I live I will never give Kennedy a pass. He killed Mary Jo and faced no consequences for it. It is only in the next life that he will pay.

Not ancient enough for me Terry. It has firmly defined his character, and nothing he has done since has changed it.
