The verses you list are all referring to drunkenness, not to drinking.

I don't see a problem with a Christian having a drink or two, so long as it's in moderation and doesn't lead to drunkenness.

Noticed you are a tad selective in your quotes, the rest of Prov. 31 is of interest as well "6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. 7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more."

When reading Prov. 31, one should start with verse 1.

Proverbs 31:1 The words of King Lemuel, the utterance which his mother taught him:

I agree that a key verse was left out of the above list. This verse, however would definitely support Diane's belief, which is the same as my own.

Proverbs 23:31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. (KJV)

Not only should the Christian abstain from drinking alcoholic beverages, the Word of God says we shouldn't even look at it.

Adam Clarke says this about Proverbs 23:31:

And when or how can a Christian know when they have a propensity for alcoholism? My only sibling has tortured himself and our family with his drunkeness since he was a teen. One drink, after 4 sober years, has him living in the woods and eating out of dumpsters again.

Gotta run pick up some allergy meds but would like to discuss the 'witness' of a Christian spotted having a drink after work by someone they've been witnessing to.

First the man takes a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes the man.

I wonder what you say to the fact that alchohol is called spirits, and the Bible says to be filled with the Holy spirit. I don't think you should fill yourself with any other spirit!

My family grew grapes at one time for a living. We had regular access to wine but not one of us has a drinking problem. We don't even like the stuff. The same areas of the US where it is preached against most are the same areas where I saw more drinking in homes than anywhere esle I have lived.

Numbers 6:3 The Nazarite's vow excluded drinking wine or other strong drink.

Commending a Nazarite vow would also commend long hair.

Wine in moderation has been shown to be beneficial to health, due to its antioxidants.

So, what about those of us who do manage to drink in moderation (myself for twenty years), but have no compulsion to drink and aren't tempted to drink to excess?

So then, you've never heard the phrase, "to lift someone's spirits"?

Look not on it when it is red .......... and yet white wine has the same alcohol content and so I never understood what exactly that meant in conjunciton with "a little wine for the stomach's sake". Red wine as opposed to white wine is healthier for you as it contains anti-oxidants and it is the red skins that produce that chemical that benefits the heart.

Having said that....... I readily admit to the drinking of wine with a meal and occassionally as a beverage by itself. This is not a habit nor do I drink to excess and nearly always it is at home and never in a drinking establishment. Do I think it is okay??? Yes I do, for me, as I am not a drunkard nor am I addicted to it.

Maybe but he was asking for the definition as it's used in one specific context.

What is the thoughts on Deuteronomy 14:22-26?

Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.

23And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always.

24And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee:

25Then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose:

26And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,

Diane's question wasn't "is drinking a sin," it was, "should a Christian drink."

    There is a subtle difference.

Before you drink, do you stop and ask yourself who is watching?
    Who is immitating?

Especially if you are a leader in a church?

Does the 10 year old looking up to you, that sees you with a beer in your hand know that you only have one beer once a year?
