Anaheim Angels Arte Moreno has announced his intent to chage the name of the Anaheim Angels to the Los Angeles Angels.

Moreno's purpose is to broaden the appeal of the 2002 World Series winning team to more markets on television. Arte Moreno has been an awesome owner, and all of his changes have, up to now, been favorable, well received, and appreciated by the fans.

    So here's the problem:

1 - Disney agreed in 1996 to change the name from "California Angels" to "Anaheim Angels" in exchange for receiving $30 million in funds to renovate the stadium. That contract is still in force with anyone who purchased the team after Disney's ownership.

2 - Anahiem, and, more generally, Orange County, is no longer a "bastard stepchild" of Los Angeles County. The OC has its own unique identity, distinct and separate from LA.

3 - Fans don't want the name change. The OC board of Supervisors doesn't like the name change. The City of Anaheim is threatening legal action if Moreno goes through with the name change. There have been weekly protests by fans outside the stadium holding signs saying "Keep the name the same". Residents' vehicles display bumper stickers with the same slogan.

Since the team was originally called the Los Angeles Angels, I have no problem with the team changing back to its original name.

    Isn't Los Angeles Angels redundant?

On reading the title of this thread, I thought you must mean 'Should they change their nickname to something besides Angels?' [IMG]

That's kinda like saying "Since the Los Angeles Dodgers were originally called the Brooklyn Dodgers, I have no problem with the team changing back to its original name."

The team was called the Los Angeles Angels when they were playing in Los Angeles. Then they moved out of Los Angeles County to the OC in 1966, they dropped the name.

The Cowboys are still the Dallas Cowboys, not the Irving Cowboys, even though they haven't played in Dallas in over three decades. [IMG]

The Jets and Giants are still the New York Jets and Giants although they haven't played football in the state of New York, much less the city for who knows how many years.

Evidently that's a one-way avenue. A team that moves to anther city, but still within the vicinity of the 'big' city, can keep the big city name. But if it changes that name to Anaheim, West Orange, Pontiac, Arlington, et al, then it will raise a firestorm if it tries to change back.

heheh! You caught it! Very good!

The Angels were originally named after the City of Los Angeles, which means "city of the angels". After 5 years, the Angels moved to Aneheim and became the "California Angels", in part because Anaheim was still a rural community with nothing but fruit tree groves and some pesky theme park that wasn't doing well. I wonder what ever happenned to that theme park [IMG]

It's interesting that Los Angeles is home to the Los Angeles Dodgers (formerly the Brooklyn Dodgers), which means that, both coming and going, they don't have a team with their namesake.

It doesn't matter to me what the Angels are called. Although I think the Dodgers would have to be upset at this move. The Angels have been putting a much better product on the field in recent years than the Dodgers and this will not help their fan base at all. Seems like a shrewd move by the Angels to gain a dominant hold on So Cal baseball.

I say move the team!! I think it is selfish of LA to have two teams when many deserving cities do not have one

At least it aint an oxymoronic name like "Utah Jazz". That kinda reminds me of the "Florida Snowmen".

The only name change I would get upset about would be if the St. Louis Cardinals became the something else Cardinals.
