Should Baptist Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

    I do not celebrate St. Patrick's Day because I believe that it is nothing more than a Catholic Holiday celebrating the Patron Catholic "Saint" of Ireland... Lately I have came under fire by many of my associates as being extreme for holding true to this conviction and I would like to ask what you think about it?

    Whats corned beef and cabbage got to do with anything [​IMG] I've never had it in my life.

    I went to MacDonalds on Monday. ;)

    I grew up on corned beef and cabbage, and it doesn't matter to me what anyone else ate. Thats my families traditional meal on st patrick's day. Got a problem with that?

    I wasn't offended in the slightest and of course I have no problem with you eating corned beef and cabbage.

    I just found it funny that this was a traditional dish for St Patricks day in the USA.

    I'm sure you don't really think this is the staple diet in Ireland today. I wouldn't want to get into a good old Irish scrap :mad: because of an innocent remark [​IMG] so don't be offended.

    For some reason or another, Corned Beef and Cabbage has come to symbolize things Irish in these United Sates. So, it is the St Patrick's Day equvilent of the Thanksgiving Day turkey. Personally, I add some carrots and turnips to it and make up New England Boiled Dinner aka Novy Angelski Sherpa. If I wanted an Irish meal, first I'd go down to the docks and get a fresh caught salmon. Then, there is the matter of soda bread.

    And no, I don't celebrate the Day. Locally all of the celebrations are controlled by RC Nationalists. So, I am not about to line up behind a Sin Fein or Virgin Mary banner.

    enda, I ave had irish stew, and loved it. No I don't think you guys eat corned beef and cabbage all the time. But it's tradititonal here.

    Corned Beef and Cabbage, not traditional with me. I don't like it :( and my great-grandfather was Irish. :rolleyes:

    I don't do anything special for St.Patrick's Day, but I do like to wear green [​IMG]

    I did decorate my dining room for spring, but then it turned winter again here.

    St. Patrick was a Godly Man and a person that preached the gospel.
    He should be honored as a great Preacher of the Gospel.
    It is sad that people celebrate him with pub craws and drunkiness.

    I know that many Baptist claim St. Patrick as one of their own, however so do the Catholics. And it is the Catholics who dominate the St. Patricks Day parades.
    And it was the Irish Americans in the mid 19th Century who are responsible for the rise of St. Patrick's Day in America. They needed a sense of unity and they found that through St. Paticks Day.

    So in short, if your conscience is bothered, don't do it.

    From one who lives in Savannah Georgia, home of the second largest celebration in the nation.
    NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    The only Christian thing I heard of that whole week was a group of Christian men marched the parade route one hour before the parade handing out Gospel tracts and preaching, EVERYTHING ELSE :eek: :eek:

    The Wednesday night before St. Patrick's Day, I explained about Patrick to my AWANA boys. How he was kidnapped by pirates, sold as a slave and yet returned as a missionary to tell those who had mistreated him all about Jesus! They thought it was neat.

    Otherwise.... we do not color stuff green or go out and party type thing. I don't have any problem with people having fun holidays like Valentine's, Mother's Day, St. Patrick's Day.

    Sometimes, as Christian's, we turn people off by finding the 'devil on every doorstop'.

    If we live by the standards and convictions that we teach and preach, although many will disagree with what we stand for we will be RESPECTED. The world can not stand "Christians" who take part in the same activities as the world.
