There are many terms out there that are considered "politically incorrect" One such term would be "retard". A sensitive person would never call a truly mentally retarded by the previously stated shorten form.

But what about other terms, such as f@g, queeer and ect.

What about referring to someone as an idiot, stupid, jerk, and ect.

Should we as Christians use or condone such terms? And yes, I have seen such terms used on this board.

    Serious thoughts only

Are you asking if we should use slanguage? This differs from society to society. In England, a fag is a cigarette. Much of the slanguage in England is far less offensive than the actual terms.

I think it depends on where and how we employ the terms, rather than an outward yes or no.

Jesus didn't walk in our century, so obviously He didn't use such terms, but He did use some tough language about some people.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Jim, I agree with you, as to how we use the terms.
Also, Jesus did use tough lanuage with some folks, but not to the point where it was disrespectful.

I always liked the way the Bible defines a male - as one who pisses on a wall.

    See Strong's.

I have no problem using names that fit the person.

    Some people really are idiots.

I'd love to see people ticketed for being stupid when their IQ is normal. For example, someone cuts you off on the freeway and flips you the bird. It should be perfectly legal for that person to be stopped by authorities and ticketed for stupidity. The fact that the person has a driver's license means their IQ is high enough to drive, so they should be held responsible for being stupid, and should be labeled as such on the ticket. Another example would be people who don't pull their pants up all the way. That's just stupid. They are stupid. They're walking around with their underpants hanging out, having to grab their pants and waddle just to be able to be mobile without tripping. Only a stupid person would do that. Then they go and reproduce...I see parents walking around like that now! EW!

    STUPID!

Gina, would you call a person you just described stupid or idiot to their face?

Just curious, how many actually know the definition of:

    Stupid
    Dumb
    Idiot
    Moron
    Retarded

Personally, I don't like to call anyone (even if they fit it to a tee) any of those words. So I try really hard not to. I have on occasion slipped however.

MC, if your picture is any indication of your personality, there is no way you could call anybody idiot, stupid, ect.

(yes, I know I am that one person you would exempt from your niceness rule  )

Gina, I'm just wondering what you would call me, as I was giving you a professional driving lesson:tear:

It usually takes quite a lot, so I doubt a personal driving lesson would do it.

Although now that you remind me, I did say something to my driving instructor as a teen. I still don't regret it though. I told him I never drove before and asked which was the gas and brake. I really didn't know. I'd also been in a bad accident a few weeks before and was taking the class because I was told if I didn't right away, I might end up too scared too. He really didn't believe me, and took me on a major interstate and wasn't paying attention. I came to some type of merge thing and had no clue what to do and was in a hair's breadth of killing a motorcyclist when he snapped to attention, reached over and grabbed the wheel, and started screaming "what are you doing?!" Thankfully the accident was diverted.

It was around nine years before I took the class again.

    Gina,
I am so sorry about you driving lesson. First, I never would have taken you on the interstate for the first lesson.

Also, I usually took about 15 minutes with a new student, before we even moved the car. I always let them know there were no dumb questions. and we would have a lot of fun as we were learning. I taught each student as an individual based on their needs.

I think it is fine to use most words as long as you use them in the correct way. Words like stupid, dumb, queer, and idiot do have a place in the American English vocabulary. I do not have a problem with the WORDS themselves. The attitude and intent of the person using these words, though, may or may not be appropriate or kind, depending on the setting and occasion.

When I was growing up, the word "negro" was used to describe a black person. Nowadays if you say that word or another "n" word, people go ballistic like it's some kind of a terrible sin. It's not a sin to use a certain word that describes a certain characteristic or behavior. Now, a hateful attitude is a sin, but for some reason the PC crowd can't seem to determine the difference. Same with the word "queer." We didn't use words like "homose*u@l" because that seemed like a scientific term, so we used the slang queer. Many Christians now have catered to the politically correct crowd and act like queer is a bad word and we are supposed to use "gay" instead. I don't buy it. Why take a perfectly nice word that means happy and hand it over to the fornicators for their own exclusive personal use?

The words retarded, handicapped, fat, buttocks, black, deaf, dumb, and ignorant all have perfectly acceptable meanings and I am not afraid to use any of them in the proper context. PC be hanged!

Jesus used some very derogatory words in reference to the Pharisees and scribes. I still use "queer" since what it means is odd, and there's nothing more odd than homosexuality.

I try to use the term "mentally handicapped" rather than "retarded". I use the word "idiot" a lot in reference to drivers who do stupid things. I use the word "jerk" in reference to a man who acts like one with his wife or girlfriend. I am seldom "politically correct". I tell it as I see it.
