Check here for a negative opinion.

(Apologies if this is a re-post. I haven't been here long.)

What about listening to the radio, playing music, shopping in town,(advertisements etc. which are quite unsavoury adorn shop windows and walls)
being in the world? Should we lock ourselves away ?become recluses???? No ! Everything around us is of Satan, we have to be subject to most of this stuff, if we are to be alive.
We are to be `in the world , but not of the world` and must not be influenced by it. We are to witness for The Lord amongst all this evil, and not be swayed by it. We are to be as lights amongst all this evil darkness.

Well as long as it is only sports I suppose that is o,k! I would hope that no Baptist Board member in good standing would ever watch "Days of our Lives!" [IMG]

In any event, what are they thinking publishing that on the Internet? Are they not aware that the Internet is used by people to watch Pornography and to view ads for Alcoholic beverages? What is the difference between watching a show on WIndows Media Player as opposed to watching it on T.V?

Or those in the 1970's who said that if you got a credit card you had taken the mark of the beast, yet were then happy for you to use it to pay for their books!

My family and I don't, but that is just a decision we made a long time ago. Nothing wrong with it, unless it runs your life.

Kinda reminds me of the strained argument over gun control. Because no one is ever shot to death without there being some kind of gun involved, the way to eliminate people from being shot to death is to merely to get rid of guns.

After all--no guns--no gun fights! Right?!!?

I don't know anyone who's been TV'd to death. Guns don't kill. People kill. If it wasn't a gun, it would be something else. Haven't you ever seen CSI?

If Christians are not supposed to watch TV, then does that mean we are supposed to get rid of the TV Name game in the games forum? [IMG]

Because television is OF the world and therefore just one of Satan's many tools.

When Jesus said to watch and pray, do you suppose He was talking about television? Everytime the issue of TV or movies comes up, it gets compared to the internet, but they are apples and oranges. I am typing a message that will be viewed by you, and you can respond to it in like manner, and I might view it and respond back. We can maintain a dialogue and discuss ideas together. It is a 2-way commincations tool (for now). Television is not. TV shows you what it wants you to see, tells you what it wants you to hear. You can change the channel, but you cannot respond to TV in any meaningful way that will affect others. You do realize that when you talk to the TV, the actors can't hear you, right? Or when you cheer for your (ugh) favorite sports team, they don't get any encouragement from you. It may feel like an interactive experience, but it isn't.

I think we all who watch television watch too much television.

And I think that we all who watch television have perhaps watched programs from time to time that we had no business watching in the first place. No one can deny that. If the television is on, you have done it.

So, is the answer to take away the televisions?

I don't think so. I think the answer lies in the conscious acknowledgement when we are flipping channels and see inappropriate viewing material that we, as Christians, are better people than that. (Only because of Jesus Christ)

I think the answer lies in purposefully shunning the inappropriate and in cutting back on the numbers of hours that the television is turned on the first place.

Make a concerted effort to plan what will be watched and when. That will take away the mindless flipping of channels that leads to having to wade through the muck to find something of value to watch.

Certainly, however, if the television is a stumbling block to you or your family members, then getting rid of it is a viable option.

There are many, many families across America who do not watch television.

    Peace-
    YSIC

I think it depends on what is being watched. I do not think all tv is evil.

Also, we have to remember the process of sanctification. As we grow in Christ, our desires change and we want less of what is sinful in our lives. There are movies and tv shows I would have watched a few years ago that I do not want to watch now. They did not bother me that much before, but now they do. This process will continue.

Therefore, I do not think Christians can decide that all Christians should not watch TV - sanctification and transformation of our minds comes through the Holy Spirit, not through legalistic views of other believers.

Television is a tool, just like any other tool, such as the internet, books, magazines, music, etc. They can be used for good or for ill. That is the bottom line. Adultery is always wrong, watching television does not fall into category.

    Should Christians watch television?

Should Christians "watch computer," which is far more interactive, having much more variety (especially in the areas of sex and porn, etc.). The temptation is always there. Should Christians even have a computer? It is the proper use of the TV that is involved, just as it is the proper use of the computer that is involved.

Phil. 4.8 "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things. 9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you."

Uuuuuuuhhhhh, if it fits in here, yep.
