It helps tou stay on point and to get back on point if you stray or chase a rabbit

Not a pastor, but taught SS for many years; and YES use notes outline, scribblings, or something, as Marooncat79 said. It was awfully easy to get sidetracked by mental wanderings or class drifts & something needed to get back on track.

The best don't use notes. The rest of us have to use them.

I ran across a site called Preaching Without Notes. I have not looked at it closely, but it appears their deal is to memorize the sermon.

Charles Koller had a good book I read years ago, Expository Preaching without Notes. I recommend it.

Yes and no. I do not use any notes in the pulpit. I normally make notes when studying, of points I see in a text and want to emphasize, and scripture passages I want to reference.

I prefer a detailed outline (more like a list of sentences to keep me on track). Without notes I cannot interact with the congregation because I get sidetracked.

John Mac preached at our seminary once. He had a very good sermon and appeared to read it off the paper.

Our professor of preaching (he taught expository preaching with outline/notes) was astonished.

Certainly an outline is a minimum for me.

I was taught by the late Dr. Richard Weeks of MBBC, to outline my message in my study and to take only my Bible with margins notes and cross-references into the pulpit. These days, I take my outline on a single sheet of 8.5x11. To me, the important part is my introduction.
My home pastor more fully outlines his messages. He hands them out during a service for attendees to take home for further study. With live stream, he supplies a pdf of the notes.

Introduction and conclusion are most important.

Be concise in both and don’t introduce non-relevant info/stories that will obscure important points.

I craft my sermons carefully. I use a sentence outline. I can preach an informal message (on about any basic verse or theme) without a note or even a 3x5 card, but I cannot do in-depth exposition without detailed notes. I translate the text myself, so have many notes on the verses alone, as well as how they relate to each other, apply to lives today, and illustrate from history, poetry, etc. At 73, I still have a photographic memory but no longer have film.

My average sermon is 6 pages typed (I use a 3-ring binder) with intro/conclusion written in full sentences; the rest in phrase outline. Preaching thru Hosea presently. Apart from a couple phrases in these 10 sermons, nothing in the verses are "familiar" so takes a lot of time to "give the sense" of the passage.

Neh 8:8 sets the example: "They read from the book (from God's Torah) translating it clearly. They gave the meaning of the passage so the people understood and applied what was said."
