A friend of mine posted this elsewhere:

Our church changed terminology this past summer and call the classes for grades 7 and up, Life Groups. A survey or some study had found that the term Sunday School made adults think of classes for little kids. It took some time for me to adjust (okay I'm old and stuck in my ways) but our class has over 75 on roll and most are mid 30's.

My home church uses "Sunday School" for the teenagers and below. The adult class is referred to as the "Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study."

We call it Bible Study, though it is not uncommon for folks also to refer to it as Sunday School.

The church my family is currently attending calls the hour of discipleship that usually occurs the hour before or after the service "Sunday School"; however, churches we've been at in the not so distant past referred to the same thing as "Foundations", "Life Group", and a whole host of cheezy/hip sounding monikers for the youth specific groups. I really don't care what you call it, but I have a mild allergic reaction when churches change the name in order to be attractive and come up with something corny sounding.

This is the enigma of the True Gospel.

No matter what package you wrap it in and attempt to rename it - it is the true Gospel it saves from sin and death through the shed blood of Jesus Christ via belief in his death burial and resurrection.

So many churches have even moved away from having these classes on Sunday that perhaps dropping the name "Sunday School" is probably apropos.

We should make sure we have not fallen into the cunning trap(s) of the devil.

Head knowledge does not guarantee spirituality but it is a necessity to keep babes from falling into his (devil's) snare.

The important thing is the study and proclamation of the word - without it we will not grow.

    Sunday School.

What the younger generation doesn't realize is that they are being critical of the Church of Jesus Christ. The church which a generation ago brought millions into the kingdom of God via "Sunday School".

A dangerous thing to do to be critical and speak with ridicule and contempt of such.

As an "old school" Christian I don't mind moving over for the new generation with fresh ideas to bring the gospel to the world of which we were commanded in the Great Commission. Sure we want to cling to those things in the past that blessed us so greatly.

Small Groups instead of Sunday School - Great and I enjoy it!
Overhead projector instead of Hymnal - also wonderful and I am moved by the camaraderie.

But is it necessary to speak with ridicule and contempt of the older generation and their "tools of the trade" which were used by God to save the lost?

In so doing one speaks evil of Christ their Lord and Master as well.

Surely there is a transition with compromise until we the grey haired (or bald) fuddy duddies" have gone to be with Him :)
