Shout to the Lord on American Idol

I was watching when they sang "Shout to the Lord" and couldn't believe it! I was very pleased to hear them sing this song. It's good to know that Jason Castro is a Christian.

I wish they hadn't changed the first part of the song from "My Jesus" to "My Shepherd," but at least people are talking about the Lord because of it.

 

Just got to love it when they replace Jesus with just anybody that one could tag as a Shepherd to. Lukewarm Christianity at it's very best, compromise with the world. However, all prayer for Mr Castro's career. May his voice be used to glorify the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

 

Um... they said "My Jesus."

I don't think this was a good choice of song for "American Idol." All this does is lend creedance to the argument that people sing Christian music because of emotional or industry swings. Now I don't believe that's true, but the issue isn't helped when people who don't know or don't care about the Lord do this just because "it's a good move on your part for your career." I don't mean to sound like I'm judging their hearts. But I'm not naive enough to think that all eight of the finalists (nor all the music producers, arrangers and players) are Christians who are singing this heartfelt song of praise to their Jesus, Savior, Comfort, Shelter. Shout to the Lord is too good a song, and I'd take my congregation (full of farmers, shift workers and people that admittedly aren't singers) singing this over American Idol finalists. But that's just my opinion.

 

...when they came back from a short break, they had a guy on stage that they had to bleep out on every other word...

I've liked Jason from the beginning.

 

Didn't see it and not really interested but sounds like a run of the mill CCM concert to me??

 

Not sure how I feel about this.

First, of course, there's the fact that American Idol represents everything that is shallow and wrong with pop music today.

Next, there's the fact that we have pagans singing a song of praise to God.

There are a whole bunch of problems with that, not the least of which is that God finds the worship of pagans to be offensive. Just look at what happened when Israel started to combine their worship of God with Baal worship and invited the pagans in for that.

There's also the issue of whether or not this constitutes some sort of weird syncritism on the part of any Christians who may be involved.

At the very least, those who do not show reverence for God by singing a worship song when, in fact, they're at emnity with Him, are blaspheming His name.

Lip service to God is a sin. It's a form of taking His name in vain.

The lyrics of the song say:

But, obviously, Jesus is not their Savior, nor their lord.

And what, exactly, is this promise that the unsaved singer is claiming for himself?

How does an unsaved person call Jesus their "comfort"? How do they call Him their "shelter"? Or "tower of refuge and strength"?

Doesn't the Bible say to the unsaved that they are enemies of God and face His wrath on Judgement Day?

There's nothing in the song about repentance or Christ's atonement. Only the idea that anyone can claim to be a child of God and that Jesus is their big buddy.

For the unsaved in the audience, every time they hear distortions of Christian doctrine, like those in so much of today's "worship" music, it gives them a false idea of what the Bible teaches and gives them a false sense of security that tells them that Jesus won't ever judge them. Why, He's just a big, lovable, cosmic teddy bear.

That further innoculates them against the Gospel and makes the idea of their sinfulness and God's holiness even more foreign to them.

I have never watched American Idol but I do love this song.
Replacing the word Jesus with shepard is not an effective witness. Most people don't know who they are referring to. Worse than lukewarm imo.

The original version which praises Jesus is great. :thumbs:

The girl who has her shirt drooping off her shoulder (yes I know it's made that way) very tight pants, high heels, and much of her belly showing is something I could do without. She's probably a nice person though.
