Hi folks. I need your help picking the right Bible commentary and maybe a Bible dictionary too.

I'm meeting with a fellow Christian for Bible study/discipleship and he is eager to study the Bible. He is a very blue collar guy and struggles with dyslexia (sp?). While he can read, he wants some resources he can check while he reads the Word so he doesn't get lost or confused. I want something from a solidly evangelical, conservative viewpoint, but which preferrably uses the NIV version as that is what we both read from. (Please no NIV bashing)

I have been looking at some of Merrill Unger's commentaries. Also thinking about Baker Commentary on the Bible, edited by Walter Elwell. Has anyone used these, and if so, what did you think of them?

What commentary and Bible dictionary would you suggest?

Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks!

Your questions are very difficult to answer, be-
cause we all have very strong and opposing
opinions with regard to Bibles and resources.
I will do my best, in spite of this, and I hope
others come along and do the same.

Since you have already chosen the NIV, and be-
cause of the friend's dyslexia struggles, how
about keeping it real simple initially. As your
friend matures in the Lord and in knowledge,
    other books could be used.

With this in mind, how about the following:
    </font>
    • Young's Analytical Concordance of the
      Bible
-- The small print can be diffi-
cult, but it is almost essential to one
who is new to Bible study. For
      learning the meanings of difficult
words. Never use a modern English
dictionary for Bible words. Be sure it
      is compatible with the NIV.</font>
    • Vine's Complete Expository Dic-
tionary of Old and New Testament
      Words
-- Simple, to the point, in-
cludes words from the NIV. Fairly
      accurate.</font>
    • Manners and Customs of the
      Bble
      by Freeman -- Helps to
      understand the basics of the
      culture, accepted behaviors, etc.</font>
And for reading other than specific Bible study,
    </font>
    • How To Read the Bible for All Its
      Worth
by Fee and Stuart -- Explains
many things about the Bible, clarifies
      differences between Bibles, basically
      puts things in proper perspective.</font>
    • A Scientific Approach to Biblical
      Mysteries
      by Faid -- Answers some
questions from a scientific point of
      view.</font>
    • Understanding the Difficult Words
      of Jesus
      by Bivin and Blizzard --
      Helps the Bible-reader to understand
concepts put forward by our Lord,
      based upon culture and Torah.</font>

I recommend the 2 volume NIV Bible Commenary. it is an abridged version of the conservative Expositor's Bible Commentary.

Bible dictionary? There are a lot o good ones. Baker's is good. Pretty ewll any resource by InterVarsity Press is helpful.

A good dictionary to use is "Smith's Bible Dictionary" by William Smith, L.L.D.

I bought it for school and have referenced it countless times.

For a Bible Study book try "Survey Of The Bible" by William Hendriksen. I believe it uses several different versions.

    Hope these will help.

Baker publications is very conservative in the field of Bible textbooks. Their "Bible Dictionary", "Bible Atlas" and "Dictionary of Theology" find constant use in my study.

Would think Zondervan also would have such.
