    In another thread a topic came up on levels of sin. I was hoping that those who support the idea of different 'levels' (for lack of a better term) of sin could expound on that idea. For example are these levels different in the believer vs the non-believer, is the punishment different for the sin, ...

    The only verse that immediately pops to my mind that possibly deals with degrees of sin is this:

    1 John 5:16-17

    What sins lead unto death and which do not? Or is this saying that some sins cause death immediately or unltimatley cause death? i.e. AIDS from extra marital sex, suicide, etc.

    1Corinthians 6: 18 was used as the text for saying some sins are 'worse' than others. I am trying to understand how it is worse, does it greive God more, is it worse for the Christian or the unbeliever, is the punishment different, does it seperate us from grace in a different way than other sin, etc, etc.

    Corry, I think it depends on the perspective. All sin is disobedience to God and therefore worthy of death spiritually. However from our perspective, sins are varying, determined by how much one hurts others. We read, especially in the Old Testament, that God is a protector of widows and orphans. Thus, sins hurting them might be more deserving of punishment here on earth than others in His eyes.

    We also have to consider that God judges the heart. So what may appear to be a heinous sin to us might be seen in much more moderate light by God who knows the person's heart. The opposite could also hold -- what we would see as something barely worth noticing might infuriate God as He knows the person's heart.

    Christ says that only blaspheme against the Holy Spirit cannot be forgiven.

    I do agree with Helen though - God's perspective is not man's.

    There are places where Jesus says some sin is worse than others -- or at least the punishment will be worse.

    And in James 3.1, we have this:
    So it seems some are held more accountable or to a higher standard.
