Just as the battle of Midway turned the tide of the Pacific war during WWII, our beleaguered submarine fleet stood in the breach from Pearl Harbor to near the end of 1943, when the arsenal of democracy reached full production.

In 1942, the USN launched one Aircraft carrier, the first Essex class. But in 1943, the USN launched 6 Essex class carriers.

The best book I have read about those early days where subs were essential is "Sink Em All." I think their story is important, in this day when some say the USA is not an exceptional nation.
