Skaggs enjoys the simplicity of bluegrass

Ricky Skaggs topped the mainstream country music charts in the '70s and '80s, but the Kentucky native has returned to his bluegrass roots, and says he plans to remain there.

Skaggs, known affectionately as bluegrass music's official ambassador, says he wouldn't fit into today's country-music scene, where the sound has become more electrified with electric and steel guitars, and drums. And why would he want to do anything but bluegrass anyway? Skaggs says he loves the instrument-driven, acoustic, down-home sound with the mandolins, fiddles, banjos, guitars and vocal harmonies.

It's the touch Skaggs brought to his country music years ago that wouldn't match today's country sound, he says.

"It's almost like comfort food through music," says Skaggs, who will perform Thursday with his Kentucky Thunder band at The Palace Theatre in Greensburg. "There's just something really special about it."

Bluegrass has maintained a simplicity that is lacking in other areas of music, he says.

Although I love Ricky Skaggs, and have seen several of his concerts, and appreciate what he has done for bluegrass, I wish I could go back a few years, and leave the show in Springfield, Mass, instead of waiting around to meet him. He was so rude that it was hard to listen to him, for a while, after.

    But I forgave him.

He and Kentucky Thunder are still the most amazing act in bluegrass, and ex-Skaggs bandmember is one of the most respected credentials in music.
