The Slave Narratives come from the Federal Writers' Project, 1936-1938. More than 2,300 first-person accounts of the experiences of the men and women, born in slavery, were collected along with 500 photographs of former slaves. The Federal Writers' Project was part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The narratives were microfilmed and include the 17 volume Slave Narratives: A Folk History of Slavery in the United States from Interviews with Former Slaves. The collection is held in the Library of Congress. The writers were given a list of questions to ask the former slaves. Their answers were recorded and are available for reading online.
