Slugs?

Believe it or not, put a cup of beer in the garden. They will get in there and drown. It may not be an option though, because of our Christian testimony in actually getting the beer.

Pick them out of your garden or go get some chickens to do it for you. Once you clear the area of slugs, keep them out with a line of salt. That's what we used to keep them off vehicles being prepared for shipment back to the States.

 

If she allows you to eat, I don't know why you're complaining.....

 

I found out that slugs like daffodil bulbs too.

I was digging up some of my bulbs to deep till the soil and the bulbs were surround by slugs! YUK!!! I don't like those slimy critters.

I will try the salt around my beds. I sure hope that it will help. I used beer and it definitely works. I've been told that it is the yeast in the beer that attracts them. They will go right for it though.

Well, I am quite happy to salt mine and let them fizz.

Apparently they also don't like soot. But don't use fresh soot cos it can burn your plants. It should ideally be a year old.

The other method I know of is to collect up your egg shells and put them in the oven (switched 0ff)when you have finished using it on a tray and dry them out and then when cold break them up, but not too small and sprinkle them round your plants.

Otherwise, I can only suggest you get a duck, but somehow the idea of eating the duck doesn't appeal...

Beer can be drunk and loved by the dogs, but the amounts of it you need to put out would not get them even tipsy! However, if they drink it, what good would it be in attracting and drowning the slugs?

Idea here -- put a cup of it buried to the rim in the ground and put chicken wire over it. That won't stop the slugs, but it will prevent the dogs from lapping it up.

Although salt is effective, too much will ruin your plants. A squirt bottle of ammonia is just as effective if you want to go the 'slug by slug' route (you will have to get up at night or very early in the morning for this one!). But at least the ammonia gives nitrogen to the ground!

If you want to avoid poisons and the mess that chickens and ducks can be, the beer really is the best bet, and I think you can set it up in a couple of places in your yard that will prevent the dogs from lapping it up.

 

Why not just leave the beer in the bottle and bury the bottle until only the top of the neck sticks out?

There's a big circle in the backyard. On the back half of the outside of the circle there's tulips, daffodils, etc., they fill it out quite a bit. On the front half of the outside is spinach. In the center of the circle: carrots. In a semi-circle between the carrots and the spinach: onions. On each side of the carrots in an arch reaching toward the back: green beans. Then strategically placed tomatos.
This is what happens when you don't have proper gardening tools...you work with what ya got. LOL
I can't wait to see what it looks like!
The kids are highly amused. Mandie told me "MOMMY! When we want vegetables later we can just go pick them and not go to the store. That means they're FREE! We don't even have to PAY for them!" She's just totally in love with the whole deal, planting, growing, all of it.
There's a peach tree but I have no clue what to do with it. It's got peaches, but the leaves look weird. Something's wrong with it. The way I see things you shouldn't have to touch a tree, they just should grow and do their own thing but this doesn't appear to be the case with some of them!

Another question. Aren't tomatos, beans, squash, corn, onions, all native to America? If that's so why don't you run into pumpkins and beans and stuff growing in the woods or on their own in other places????

Your peach tree probably has peach leaf curl, a fungus. Trees need care, too, Gina, and peaches, plums, and nectarines are all very subject to peach leaf curl.

Yeah, that's what it looks like! It doesn't look as bad as most of the pictures though, at least not yet. Looks like it's too late to do anything for this year though.
There's another tree, maybe you can help me figure out what it is? Or a bush, but it's a big one! Just under my height (ok, so it's not THAT very tall!) but it's very wide around and full, the blooms look like little bits of Queen Anne's Lace. I've tried looking it up on a few sites and didn't see it, too many of the sites just have names of these things and no pics. One site to look up what trees are offered only a few possibilities based on the leaves. *sigh*
If you get that one, I have one more for you!
