Should movies be given a "R" rating if there is smoking?

If that's the case I'd have to sew an "R" on the smokers in my congregation. In reality, I can think of a lot worse things that I don't want to see or for my kids to see than someone smoking in a movie. There are a lot worse words that I know I don't want to hear or for my kids to hear. Smoking doesn't bother me in movies.

Why? Did this suddenly become illegal, or immoral, somehow?

Stupid, maybe, but that is no reason for a "R" rating, last time I checked. And BTW, have you heard or seen the same suggestion about drinking? I would not be opposed, if either show those of illegal age participating, 18 for smoking legally, and 21 for drinking legally, in such a practice. Then one might have a case regarding some advocacy of illegal ativity. But not just because there is "smoking" or "drinking" in the picture.

    BTW, I guess I am a 'stupid' 'tee-totaler'.

No; I don't think I Love Lucy merits an R.

On the TV show, Lucy was going to name her dog "Lucky" but their sponsor - another cancer stick compay - would not allow it, because they did not want the viwers to think of Lucky Strike.
The same was true of a "quiz show" Lucy was on

That's quite well-known. See Lucy and Desi's commercial finale here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzTGxY7gTCg

You might find some of the Related Videos interesting, too; particularly Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble smoking Winstons.

    No.

If you say yes then , any movie with kissing, groping, shower scenes, couples in bed together, alcohol,
people eating fast food or fattening food, speeding, stealing, fighting, killing, and so on would have to be rated "R" as well.

Remember when the politicians were friends with big tobacco? Why did they break up? :D

Now the government is best buds with big oil and the fast food industry. No one can sue any fast food company for the negative effects from their products. Why do they receive special treatment?

Yeah, I'd thought, too, about why they didn't call them Winstones in that bit  . But if RJR had enough control to bar Walter Cronkite from saying their jingle becaue he 'corrected' it "in the interest of good grammar," they would be even more picky about the very name of the product.

Remember, smoking was not always known for it's dangers.

Smoking won't send you to hell, it will just make you smell like you've been there.

I can think of worse vices...
